There should be a separate column for sales tax collected and dispersed to the seller, and another column for sales tax collected within the Shop app and remitted to Shopify and then to the tax authorities.
Shopify AI feedback I received for this suggestion:
"That’s a genuinely useful suggestion! Right now the order export CSV lumps all tax together, which makes it harder to reconcile your actual tax liability versus what Shopify has already remitted on your behalf (e.g., for marketplace facilitator states).
Having two distinct columns would make a real difference for:
Tax reconciliation — knowing exactly what you owe vs. what’s already been handled
Bookkeeping accuracy — your accountant can clearly see which tax amounts hit your books vs. Shopify’s
Audit readiness — cleaner records if you’re ever reviewed by a state tax authority"
Hey @Kyle1234 ,
This is a very valid suggestions.
Having seprates coulumns for standards sales tax and market place facilitated tax such as (Shop app remittances) would make reconciliation and accounting much clearer especially for merchants operating in multiple tax jurisdictions.
It would also reduce confusion during audits and help ensure more accurate financial reporting directly from Shopify exports.
Thank You !
Hey — I’m with you on this. When the CSV just has a single “tax” figure, it’s a pain to reconcile what you actually owe vs. what was collected/remitted by Shopify (Shop app / marketplace facilitator scenarios).
In the meantime, the closest workaround is usually to lean on Shopify’s built‑in reports (tax/finance reports, plus payout/transaction views) to separate what was remitted on your behalf vs. what hit your payouts, and then export those for your accountant.
If you need it cleanly split into columns (per order, per jurisdiction, etc.) without manual spreadsheet work, a reporting app can help — for example Mipler reports can build custom order-level exports with tax breakdowns and filters, and it’s easy to schedule/share: Mipler reports.
If you tell me which countries/states you’re dealing with (and whether it’s mainly Shop app orders), I can suggest the most reliable report combo to get the split today.
This is a thoughtful suggestion. Shopify’s native export already covers a lot of ground, and adding more granular tax breakdowns would be a great enhancement.
Ideally, the export would separate:
Sales tax collected and paid out to the seller
Sales tax collected through the Shop app or Shop channel and handled by Shopify
Order level tax details such as tax title, jurisdiction, and tax amount
In the meantime, while Shopify considers building this into the native CSV export, you can achieve something similar with a custom report in Report Pundit.
We can create an order level tax report that separates Shop channel orders from the rest of the Shopify orders. The report can include fields like Order ID, Order Date, Order source, Sales Channel, Payment Gateway, Order Total, Tax Title, Tax rate, Tax Region, Tax Amount, Seller Collected Tax, and Shop Channel Collected Tax.
This gives a much clearer view of what tax may still need merchant review and what has already been handled through the channel. It also helps with bookkeeping, accountant review, and audit preparation.
Additionally, the report can be scheduled for automatic delivery by email on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, eliminating the need for repeated manual exports and filtering.
