i’m collecting sales tax in Florida, some orders are collecting and some not, I checked all the items are checked to collect tax. Does anyone has the same issue?
There are actually quite a lot of possible reasons for mismatches.
Shop or other sales channel that is a marketplace
Product category not set
Product not marked as physical product when creating it
Customer marked as tax-exempt
Tax override
Guest checkout using a different email on exempt customer
Not every sale is going to have tax, even in your home state. Shop handles its own tax.
I tried to make a test order from my account and It didn’t charge me sales tax.
Not sure how to categorize the products.
First go to your tax settings, make sure you are collecting, if you have Shopify Tax it’s really easy to see what states are there. See that there are no tax overrides. Then go to the customer profile and make sure it’s not marked as tax exempt. Then go to the product editor page and set the product category. Also make sure if it’s a physical product that you mark it physical product.

One more thing to check is the shipping address you’re using for your test orders. In Florida sales tax can vary by county because of local surtaxes. If your store isn’t calculating tax for a particular address try testing with a few different Florida ZIP codes to see if the behavior is consistent.
If it only happens with one customer account create a completely new guest checkout in an incognito window. That will help determine whether it’s an account specific issue or a tax configuration problem.
I happened with multiple customers, and there’s customers who ordered multiple times some of the orders charged tax and some not so the issue is not from the customer.
I checked the category it’s just regular category like others it’s just sweatshirt
Go to the product that the person bought but wasn’t charged tax. Scroll down to the variants, and expand them, then click on the variant to open the variant editor. On the right column, make sure it says "Charge tax Yes"
Other than that, it’s just a guessing game without screenshots and/or store link so we can check.
I just checked all variants marked as charge tax, it also happens with items with no variants.

Check whether the customers, shipping addresses, or products on the untaxed orders have any tax exemptions. if everything looks correct, it’s worth connecting Shopify Support, as a few merchants have reported inconsistent tax collection.
