Same product, different quantities in the same shopping cart?

Hello,

I am looking for a solution to a problem I am having with my shop. I sell rope by the meter. If someone wants a rope that is 20 meters long, they add a quantity of 20 of the rope to the cart. However, if the customer wants a 20 meter piece and a 10 meter piece of the same rope, this shows up in the cart as a quantity of 30 for that rope. I have to rely on order comments or follow-up emails to ensure the customer gets the right lengths of rope that they want.

My question is, is there a way to add the same product to the shopping cart with different quantities? Each add-to-cart event results in it’s own line-item in the shopping cart?

Yes, can write a script which will check the product exists in cart then a rand number will be added to cart which will be treated as different product in cart, therefore it will come as different product in order.
