Scam? Or legit

Hi! I’ve been receiving some emails from this email address below regarding my store, possibly being shut down. I was wondering if that’s legit or if it is a scam. They’ve messaged me a couple of times from the same email address but different names. I’m guessing it’s a scam, but I also want to be cautious.

I’m Tommy, A certified Shopify Partner Senior Staff. partner ID 3594547. After reviewing your store, I noticed your current theme is unlicensed. Can you confirm its source?

It’s crucial to resolve this promptly. Failure to provide proof of theme licensing may prompt Shopify to take action, potentially resulting in store shutdown. Let’s address this issue promptly to ensure compliance with Shopify’s guidelines. Looking forward to your swift response.

Best regards,
Tommy Shopify Partner

I received something similar, same ID, but they were called Luke!

Seems likely to be a scam in that case.

Hi there @tempy2000 and @KristineDianne . Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Commuity with your questions around these emails you’ve been receiving regarding your theme. My name is Imogen. It’s good to meet you!

I can tell you that the email being used is not an official Shopify email address, so this wouldn’t be an email coming from Shopify directly. However, this email is being framed as if it is being sent from someone claiming to be a Shopify Partner. It’s definitely odd and out of the ordinary for a Partner to reach out to you directly to notify you about issues with your theme, especially as a an individual wouldn’t be able to verify if the theme you’re using is ‘unlicensed’ unless they were the developer of the theme you’re using. For the sake of clarity, I’m also happy to let you know that if you’re using one of the free themes offered by Shopify, that you don’t need to be concerned about licensing for use of free themes, as free themes are made by Shopify and do not require a purchase. Dawn would be one such theme example.

As I can’t authenticate users here in the Community, I can’t check the theme you’e using, nor can I see what theme purchases you’ve made on your store (as once you purchase a theme, you acquire a license for use of that theme on your stores). As such, I recommend that you reach out to our Authenticated Support Team so we can confirm information around your theme.
