A business operator seeks to streamline order fulfillment by scanning barcodes printed on Shopify orders to automatically mark them as fulfilled, rather than manually entering order numbers. The desired workflow involves printing daily orders with barcodes via Order Printer, assembling products, then scanning to fulfill.
Key Challenge:
Most available apps focus on scanning product-level barcodes, which doesn’t work for this business selling custom-made items without individual product barcodes.
Current Status:
One participant successfully added order number barcodes to packing slips using a GroovePacker guide
No solution yet found for scanning those barcodes to trigger fulfillment in Shopify
The business uses ShipTheory for shipping label generation after fulfillment
Community Response:
At least 8 additional users report needing this exact functionality, suggesting widespread demand. One developer offered to help build a custom solution. StarShipIt was mentioned as a potential alternative approach, though not an exact match.
Resolution: The discussion remains open with no confirmed solution identified.

I run the operations and production side of a growing business. I’m looking to speed up our order fulfilment process. At the moment, packers are manually entering the order number into Shopify, ticking the box, then repeating this for around twenty orders. They then mark all orders as fulfilled and start the process again until all orders are fulfilled for the day.
Ideally the process would be;
1 - Print all orders for the day via Shopify, with a barcode on each order (I have already got the order barcodes to work).
2 - Assemble the order ready for fulfilment.
3 - Scan the barcode to fulfil the order.
We use ‘Order Printer’ on Shopify to print our orders and ShipTheory to manage our shipping rules and print the shipping labels once the order is fulfilled.
I’ve looked at some of the apps available but most don’t seem to have this feature. I see the apps deal with scanning barcodes for each product on an order. The products we sell are all custom made and we don’t have barcodes for each product. I’m hoping there is a work around.
Any recommendations or guides on how to get this set up would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, I still haven’t found a solution to this. I find it strange that we are the only two businesses that would need this feature. I did work out how to add a barcode to our orders that holds the Shopify order number.
This isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, but our scanning workflows could offer an alternative approach. Check it out here and here. Just a thought!
I am currently developing a similar solution for a client’s store and would be happy to assist anyone looking to automate their fulfilment process.
Please share details about your current setup, and I can help determine whether it is compatible out of the box or if any customisations would be required.
If you haven’t discovered a suitable solution, you might want to check out my new app ScanFlow — it’s designed exactly for this kind of workflow.
With ScanFlow, your team can scan a single order QR code (can be added to your Order Printer template) to instantly log custom events like “Packed” or “Fulfilled” (no product barcodes needed). You can also capture photos or notes during the scan and even trigger Shopify Flow automations — for example, automatically marking the order as fulfilled.
It works from any smartphone with a simple PIN-based login, so your packers can move fast without needing full Shopify access.
Hope this is of interest to you! If you have any questions please let me know.
