Search, Navigation, and Filter

I run a store, where we sell replacement trailer parts through a Shopify site. Our customers are often looking for very specific components, so I’m really interested in optimizing for fast, accurate searches and improving conversions for technical products. Super excited to hear from the experts and other merchants here!

How can we identify whether search, navigation, or filters are holding back conversions on a technical parts store?

This is a really important question, especially for stores with a wide or technical product catalog. If people can’t find what they need quickly, it often leads to frustration and lost conversions.

To figure out what’s going wrong, you need to see the experience through your users’ eyes. That starts with qualitative research. Tools like session recordings, on-site surveys, or even quick customer interviews can surface where people are getting stuck or dropping off. At Speero, we’ve seen this kind of research reveal surprisingly simple friction points that aren’t obvious from data alone.

Then comes the quantitative layer. Dive into metrics like internal search terms, filter engagement, bounce rates on filtered pages, and search exits. These signals can help highlight where the journey is breaking down.

The exact solution depends on what your research shows, but there are patterns we often see. Things like confusing or inconsistent filters, overwhelming search results with no way to narrow them down, or search tools that don’t recognize partial SKUs or synonyms. These issues are common, but they aren’t universal. That’s why relying on best practices alone can lead you in the wrong direction.

The key is to be user-led, not best-practice-led. Once you understand what’s really happening for your users, you can start testing solutions that are meaningful and grounded in real behavior.
