A Shopify store I manage has certain products that are seasonal only, so they are active for a couple of months of the year, then reverted to draft for the rest of the year. Because of this, naturally, the product pages have 404 errors when they are not active.
My question is, what is the best way around this? Should I create 301 redirects and then turn them off again each time we make a product live again, or is there an existing solution that is more efficient than this?
Many Thanks,
Georgia
Hi @lala1122 ,
There are a few options you can consider to avoid 404 errors for seasonal products on your Shopify store:
-
Set up a redirect for the product page to a relevant category or landing page when the product is not available. This way, visitors to the product page will still be able to find related products or information on your site. You can use the Shopify Redirect app to set up and manage redirects easily.
-
Use a “coming soon” or “notify me” page instead of a 404 error page when the product is not available. This can help to capture the interest of visitors and allow them to sign up to be notified when the product becomes available again.
-
Use a 404 page with a search bar and links to popular or related products to help visitors find what they are looking for. This can reduce the bounce rate and improve the overall user experience.
Overall, the best option for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. You can experiment with different approaches and see which one works best for your store.
