I can’t find an explanation of what “standard” means in tangible terms to then put 10x and 40x into context.
I’m working with a client who wishes to run a flash sale on a single product which will be promoted by a celebrity with a significant fan base.
I’ve read through Shopify’s performance and load testing articles/videos (BFCM etc) and understand Shopify can handle significant load but more specifics on above would be helpful.
Hey Sharpy! Happy to help you out with this question.
Shopify has an incredibly resilient infrastructure, we handle 100s of thousands of checkouts at any given time, so a couple thousand more is not usually going to cause an issue. That being said, there can be instances where we want to reinforce the checkouts capacity.
The standard number of checkouts that Shopify is able to process is about 4000 CPM (checkouts per minute). Once the throttle is reached, customers past that number will be added to a checkout queue and will gain access to the checkout once their position is up.
Too many bad API calls from custom apps or lots of third party app connections to process a sale can cause delays, but generally speaking most stores are perfectly equipped to handle a flash sale, regardless of the plan they are on.
