I’m optimizing a Shopify store and would like guidance on completing the “Search engine listing” section for product pages. What are the best practices for writing SEO-friendly page titles, meta descriptions, and URL handles? Are there recommended character limits, keyword placement strategies, and common mistakes to avoid?
Hi TitaItalia,
Eli here from TinySEO.
Page titles: 50-60 characters. Lead with your main keyword, end with your brand (e.g. “Merino Wool Socks - BrandName”). No keyword stuffing, no duplicates across products.
Meta descriptions: 80-160 characters. Not a ranking factor but drives clicks, so write it like ad copy: keyword + benefit + soft CTA (“Free shipping over $50”). Never leave it blank or reuse it.
URL handles: Short, lowercase, hyphenated, core keyword only. merino-wool-socks, not best-warm-merino-socks-2025. Biggest trap: changing a handle on a ranking page breaks the link, so always set up a redirect.
Avoid duplicate titles/descriptions, blank metas, and over-optimizing into spam.
If you would like to find too long/too short/missing meta titles, meta descriptions or url issues - try our site audit!
Make it simple..
you have to optimise product pages according to search visibility along with strictly follow the Google search console guidelines..
Example for search friendly ( meta information )
" Summer cloth for pools side "
URL : domain/summer-cloth-for-pools-side
Keywords : Summer cloth for pools side
Title : Summer cloth for pools side - Brand Name
Description: best collection for Summer cloth for pools side to better
I think you can keep things simple and user-focus rather than trying to cram in as many keywords as possible.
For title, it could be around 50-60 characters, put the primary keyword or product name near the beginning. For meta description, I always keep it under 160 characters with a subtle call to action, from user perspective, this affects my click intent so I do the same from merchant perpective. For URL handle, keep it short and descriptive, connect by hyphens and avoid using unneccesary work or SKU unless they’re really needed.
Some basic things to be avoided
- Stuffing too many keywords in titles or description
- Using the same title across multiple products
- Making URLs too long or with random numbers, ids,..
- Meta descriptions don’t accurately describe page content
These are few things you defenitely can handle on your own. But if you’re handling large catalog and want something more time-efficient. You can check out tools like SEOWILL (here) to save time and efforts.
Hope this helps!
Hi @TitaItalia,
Filling out the “Search engine listing” on Shopify is like building your front window on Google. You want it to look good for search engines and sound great for real people. Here is a simple way to handle it.
Keep your page title under 60 characters so Google does not cut it off. Put your most important keyword right at the front, and then add your brand name at the end. Do not just stuff random keywords together; write a clear, natural title that makes people actually want to click.
Think of the meta description as your quick sales pitch, and keep it under 155 characters. Tell the buyer exactly why they need your product, mention perks like “free shipping”, and always end with a clear call to action like “Shop now.” Make sure you write a unique description for every single product so Google knows your pages are all different.
Your URL handle should be short, clean, and only use lowercase letters separated by dashes, like “blue-summer-dress”. Avoid using long, messy links with random numbers or words. Most importantly, try never to change a URL once it is live, but if you really have to, always check the box to create a redirect so you do not break your links.
To automate the manual work, I highly recommend using SearchPie: SEO, Speed & Schema. It has an AI tool that can automatically write good titles and descriptions for your entire catalog at once. It tracks your character counts and handles the boring technical SEO so you can get back to running your business.
Hope this helps you get your store ranking!
Hi TitaItalia,
Great question, and it is smart to treat these three fields as separate jobs rather than one. Here is how I would approach each part of the Search engine listing.
Page title
Aim for about 60 characters so Google does not cut it off in results. Put your main keyword near the front, then a short benefit or qualifier, then your brand at the end. Something like “Merino Wool Socks, Cushioned and Odor Resistant | YourBrand”. Keep every product title unique so similar items do not compete with each other in search.
Meta description
Aim for about 150 to 160 characters. It is not a direct ranking factor, but it is the little ad that decides whether someone clicks your result, so write it for a real person. Work the main keyword in once naturally, since Google bolds it, and give a clear reason to click, like a key benefit, free shipping, or easy returns. Write a distinct one for each page. If you leave it blank, Shopify falls back to the first lines of your body text, which usually reads flat.
URL handle
Keep it short, lowercase, and readable, with the core keyword in and the filler words removed. So merino-wool-socks rather than product-12345-copy-of-final. One important thing: once a page is ranking, try not to change the handle. If you truly must, use the redirect Shopify offers when you edit it, so you keep the value the old link earned.
Common mistakes I would watch for
Duplicate titles and meta text across near identical products, keyword stuffing, blank meta descriptions, titles so long they get truncated, and changing URL handles without a redirect.
One practical habit: search your main keyword on Google, read the titles and snippets the top results use, then write something clearer and more specific than theirs. And use the live preview under the Search engine listing box to check nothing is getting cut off before you save.
Hope that helps, and good luck with the optimizing.
