Sell a subscribtion (private group access) on shopify

I need help setting up a subscription on Shopify that requires users to be logged in. The goal is to grant access to a members-only page for subscribers and remove access if they don’t renew. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi @raphpolo3

You can set up a subscription-based private group on Shopify using subscription apps and customer account restrictions. Here’s how:

  1. Use a Subscription App – Apps like Recharge, Bold Subscriptions, or PayWhirl allow you to sell recurring memberships and manage payments automatically.
  2. Restrict Access to Members-Only Content – Use an app like Locksmith or EasyLockdown to create a gated page that only logged-in, active subscribers can access.

Hope this helps :slightly_smiling_face:

You can handle this pretty cleanly with Shopify’s built-in features.

The key is customer accounts + tags. You can set it up so that when someone subscribes through a subscription app, they get a tag like subscriber. Then, you update your page templates to check for that tag — if a logged-in customer has it, they see the members-only page; if not, they’re redirected or shown a message. When a subscription expires or isn’t renewed, the tag gets removed and access disappears automatically.

I also built Latch to make this much easier — it automates tagging, locks pages, and removes access without any code. But the tag-based approach works if you’re comfortable setting up the theme logic.
