Selling my website/business HELP

Topic summary

A merchant is seeking guidance on selling their e-commerce website through a broker and wants to clarify what exactly gets transferred in the sale. Specifically, they’re concerned about whether the buyer would acquire the entire business—including their Instagram account (which has many followers and is being used for a new project)—or just the website and product-related assets.

Key context provided:

  • Shopify’s Exchange Marketplace was decommissioned on November 1st, 2022, so it’s no longer available for buying/selling stores
  • Alternative platforms suggested include Flippa (sell directly or through a broker with free valuation) and MicroAcquire (list startup and get selling assistance)

The discussion remains open with the merchant awaiting more specific guidance on what assets typically transfer in an e-commerce business sale and how to protect their social media presence during the transaction.

Hi I hope someone can help, I’m looking at selling my e-commerce website via an e-commerce broker (I have researched them thoroughly btw) does anyone know if I do sell is it the whole business as in brand and product etc the buyer would want or just the website which they would amend for the own products? I don’t want to see my Instagram as I am using it for a new project and I have a lot of followers.

Hi @jlomax ,

I understand you’re looking to sell your online business. What have you looked into so far?

Previously, you could sell and buy stores through the Exchange Marketplace. However, as of November 1st, 2022, the Exchange Marketplace app has been decommissioned. This is to say that all of Exchange’s listings are not available to browse, and merchants cannot install the app on their store to create new listings.

We have more information included in our Exchange Marketplace FAQ resource.

However, I would like to suggest other options for selling your business online:

  • Flippa - You can sell directly, sell through a broker and receive a free valuation.
  • MicroAcquire - You can list your start-up and get help with selling.

Please click on each brand’s services to learn more about what they offer and which one best suits your business needs.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
