We need to be able to sell products before we have them physically. So we would like to be able to make the sale but it’s obvious that it won’t be shipped until a certain date.
How is this done?

This is a great question! You can allow your customers to purchase items that are out of stock by allowing your store to continue to sell while out of stock. In order to do this, you will need to make your way to the products page within the admin. Once you are on the product page, you will need to select the check box continue selling when out of stock. I took a screenshot from my test store to show you the section I am referring to:

Selling out of stock products is a different thing completely, in this scenario there will be 100 products actually for sale however they cannot be shipped until officially launched in 4 weeks time.
Think of it like pre-ordering the latest iPhone, buy now, receive it when it’s officially launched.
Does that make sense?
