I print my shipping labels on a rollo printer and my packing slips on a standard HP printer. But each time I print one verus the other, I have to select a different printer and its frustrating when I forget and my packing slip prints on my rollo labels wasting resources. is there a way to set the default within Shopify that it knows to print labels to Rollo and Packing Slips to the HP?

Shopify does not natively have a setting to route different documents to different printers. Because Shopify relies on your web browser’s standard print dialog, it can only remember the very last printer you used, which leads to those accidental, wasteful prints on your Rollo labels.
To fix this and automate your printing workflow, you have a couple of great options. Many merchants use advanced shipping platforms like Shippo or ShipStation, which allow you to assign specific printers to specific document types within their app settings. Another highly reliable solution is to use a print automation service like PrintNode. This service connects directly to your Shopify store and routes your thermal labels straight to your Rollo and your standard sheets to your HP printer automatically, bypassing the clunky browser print window entirely.

Shopify does not support setting separate default printers for shipping labels and packing slips. Printing is handled through the browser/system, so printer selection (Rollo or HP) is controlled by your device rather than Shopify. Because of this limitation, you cannot assign different default printers inside Shopify for different document types. The most practical solution is to either manually select the correct printer each time or use separate browser profiles one for shipping labels and one for packing slips so each profile remembers its own printer and avoids mix ups.

Shopify doesn’t support different default printer by document type. A good compromise is to manage it at the system or browser level. You can create printer preferences shortcuts in Windows or use “last used printer” with caution in a dedicated print workflow.
Alternatively, you can use a print manager like PrintNode or a chrome extension that applies rules by each print job. A few sellers do run two chrome profiles, one locked to Rollo, and one to HP, for separation, so the labels don’t get switched.
