Service Area Fee

Hey! I’m an aerial photographer starting Shopify, and would like to find out how would I charge clients on Shopify to pay the service plus the service fee depending on their postcode

For example: I PAYED a product £60 - when address inputted, it will calculate cost that I have set

Can anyone help

Thanks

Hi there,

This is Jay from Fast Bunde. I hope you are doing well.

Sure! What you’re looking for is definitely doable in Shopify, but it requires a bit of setup to handle charging clients based on their postcode. Here’s how you can approach it:

1. Use Shopify’s Shipping Profiles for Postcode-Based Charges

Even though you’re not shipping a physical product, Shopify’s shipping system can be repurposed to calculate fees based on the postcode your clients enter. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > Shipping and Delivery in your Shopify Admin.
  2. Under “Shipping Profiles,” create a new profile specifically for your photography services.
  3. Set up shipping zones based on postcode ranges. For example:
    • Create a “Shipping Zone” for specific postcodes (e.g., London postcodes like WC2, SW1, etc.).
    • Assign a flat rate (e.g., £20 for Zone A, £30 for Zone B).
  4. Name the fee something relevant to your service, such as “Service Fee.”

When a customer enters their postcode during checkout, Shopify will automatically calculate the additional fee.

2. Use a Third-Party App for Advanced Postcode Pricing

If your pricing structure is more complex (e.g., exact fees for specific postcodes), you can use apps from the Shopify App Store like:

  • Advanced Shipping Rules
  • Postcode Shipping
  • Parcelify

These apps allow you to:

  • Set very detailed rules for postcode-based fees.
  • Assign fees based on postcode ranges, regions, or even specific areas.

3. Modify the Product Pricing Dynamically (Optional)

If you want the postcode-based fee to show up before checkout, you can use Shopify Scripts (available with Shopify Plus) or custom code with an app like Custom Fields. This would dynamically adjust the price on the product page based on the client’s postcode.

4. A Simple Workaround for Non-Shipping Fees

If you want a straightforward solution without over-complicating things:

  • Add a “Service Fee” product to your store.
  • Manually instruct clients to add the product based on their postcode. For example:
    • Create “Service Fee for Zone A (£20)” and “Service Fee for Zone B (£30)” as separate products.
    • Display a note during the checkout process to guide them.

5. Automating This with Custom Development

If you want the cleanest user experience:

  • A developer could write custom JavaScript to dynamically calculate the total based on the postcode entered on the cart or product page.
  • This requires using Shopify’s Storefront API and might need some custom app development, but it’s the most seamless solution.

Example Flow:1. Client selects a photography service (base cost: £60).

  1. At checkout, they enter their postcode.
  2. Based on the postcode, an additional fee (e.g., £20 or £30) is applied automatically.
  3. The final total reflects both the service and the fee.

Which Solution Is Best for You?

If you’re just starting out and want something simple, go with Shopify’s Shipping Profiles or a third-party app like Postcode Shipping. If you want a more polished and automated approach, consider investing in custom development later.
