Sessions not updating. Is it affecting traffic to site?

Today and yesterday, I have had the message below appearing for the sessions on my site. It started yesterday morning and went away late in the day and reappeared this morning. Yesterday and today, sessions have been quite a bit lower than usual. Is this issue affecting traffic to my site?

Hi @HTX-Fluid-Power

That message is from Shopify’s analytics system and usually just means there was a delay in processing the session data — not necessarily a real drop in traffic.

So during that time, the session numbers may have appeared lower or incomplete because the reporting was lagging behind.

A few things to note:

  • This is generally a reporting delay, not an indication that customers weren’t visiting your store.
  • Shopify normally backfills the missing data once processing catches up, so the numbers for May 5–6 should update automatically.
  • It’s also a good idea to compare with another analytics tool like Google Analytics if you have it connected, just to confirm your actual traffic during that period.

If the numbers still look unusually low now that the delay has passed, then it would make sense to investigate further.

Thanks

Hi @HTX-Fluid-Power

It is not usually affecting your real traffic. When they say “not updating” in sessions, it’s often a delay in reporting or they are losing tracking on your end, in your analytics, not on the storefront itself.
The fact is your site visitors can be coming as they always do, or they can be coming in droves and Shopify is not recording or showing the data live because there is a temporary lag in reporting, due to changes in browser tracking or they are being interfered with by ad blockers.
Best check is to compare with another source like GA4 or your ad platform. If those still show traffic, your store is fine and it’s just a reporting issue that usually clears itself up quick.

The message you shared means Shopify analytics is delayed. It does not affect your actual store traffic.

I’ve seen this happen before on Shopify where session data updates slower than normal.

So, the message itself normally does not reduce traffic. To verify, see if real-time visitors/orders are still normal and check Google Analytics or Search Console too, not only Shopify sessions.

If both Shopify analytics and external analytics are lower, then it could be an actual traffic drop. But that popup alone is usually just a reporting delay.
