Set English as secondary language for international market

Topic summary

Problem: Store’s primary market is Hebrew, but the owner wants English as the default language for the International market without using a separate domain. Current options show Hebrew applied to subfolders (e.g., /he-), which is not desired.

Key context: Shopify Markets manages regional settings. “Subfolders” means language-specific URL paths (e.g., /en for English).

Proposed solution:

  • Use the subfolder configuration for the International market and create an English path (e.g., /en).
  • In the International market settings, set English as the default language for that market.
  • Ensure English is published; unpublished languages cannot be set as default.

Artifacts: Screenshots were shared showing where to enable subfolders, set the default language, and publish languages, which are central to applying the steps.

Status: Guidance provided, but no confirmation from the store owner that the change worked; resolution not yet confirmed.

Hi,

I have set Hebrew as my default language for my main market,

As for my second market (international) I want to set it for English, but it seems I cant.

In Markets->International->Languages and Domains->manage domains

I can either use primary market configuration which is Hebrew,

Use a separate domain (which I don’t want to), or use subfolders, which also uses Hebrew (adds /he- in in the url).

What can I do?

Hi Lalafshasha,

To achieve your goal of setting English as the default language for your international market while keeping Hebrew for your main market, you can use the subfolder option. Here’s what to do:

  1. Enable Subfolders: Configure your International market to use subfolders.configure a separate domain for the international market.
For example, add the suffix /en after /he.

  2. Set the Default Language:

Once configured, you can set English as the default language for the international market.

Please ensure that English is published. Unpublished languages cannot be set as default.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions or need further advice.
