Hi everyone, I am trying to set up a payment provider but i keep getting asked for business registration number, and sst number. The latest one i got is from Payex. i am a ghanaian living in Malaysia. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi @Denchill40 — the key distinction is not your citizenship by itself, but which person or legal business will be the merchant of record.
Shopify lists payment providers by the store/business country, but each provider runs its own onboarding and can require local registration, tax and bank details. If Payex is asking for a Malaysian business-registration number or SST information, Shopify cannot waive that requirement. Do not enter someone else’s details or invent a number; ask Payex in writing whether it accepts a non-Malaysian resident as an individual/sole proprietor and exactly which documents it accepts.
In Shopify admin, check Settings > Payments and compare only the providers currently shown for Malaysia, then confirm eligibility directly with each provider before integrating it. Shopify’s current provider guide is here: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/third-party-providers/payment-gateway-availability
Before anyone can narrow the options safely, can you confirm three things without posting any document numbers: (1) is the store operated by a registered Malaysian business or by you personally, (2) do you have a Malaysian business bank account, and (3) is this for online checkout only or also POS? Those facts determine which provider can legally onboard the account.
Hello @kai_xing , thank you so much for responding.
(1) The store is operated by me personally. (2) I do not have a malaysian business account. (3) And this purposely for online checkout.
I am only in contact with the payment providers Shopify currently shows for Malaysia. Will keep asking and trying the other options
Adding a route worth knowing about alongside what kai_xing laid out: a lot of foreigners in your exact position (no local entity, no local bank account) end up skipping the local-registration chase entirely and instead form a US LLC (or UK LTD) to open a Stripe/PayPal account through that entity instead of a Malaysian one. It sidesteps the SST/business-registration-number requirement completely since you’re no longer applying as a Malaysian merchant of record. Worth weighing against staying local since it’s a bigger step to take just for payments. Are you actively looking into the LLC/LTD route now, or holding out to see if a Malaysia-compatible provider like Payex will work out first?
