Every time I have used shipinsurance it has been a poor experience.
Even though it seems to be integrated into Shopify, the minute you submit a claim you are required to manually upload a raft of documents that could easily be supplied to shipinsurance through the Shopify integration.
Every claim requires a time-consuming back-and-forth where they ask for more documents.
Second, the buyer has to go through an onerous form-filling out process. Buyers are not interested in filling out forms.
Third, they require records of communication with the buyer proving they never got it - it isn’t good enough that they can see through tracking that the item was delivered to the wrong address and never re-routed.
This is not really insurance. You sell a $100 product and spend way more than $100 of your time and effort trying to get reimbursed.
They will tell you that this is all so they can validate a claim.
It seems to me that this is really to discourage valid claims. Shopify should find a new partner, or provide the insurance themselves for their “Shopify Shipping” program.
Your experience lines up with what many merchants have reported. The integration looks smooth on the front end, but once a claim starts the process becomes manual and slow. The buyer paperwork is the biggest blocker since most customers won’t complete forms, which leaves the merchant stuck.
If you rely on insurance often, a third party like Shipsurance, Route, or your carrier’s own insurance tends to be more predictable. Until Shopify improves the partnership, using an external provider usually saves time and frustration.
If you’ve been dealing with the slow or complicated claim processes with Shipsurance, it will be really worth switching to a self-managed shipping protection setup rather than relying purely on carrier or third-party insurance.
For example, Captain Shipping Protection. It lets you add a simple shipping protection widget on the cart or checkout page (shown in the screenshot below), so customers can choose to pay a small protection fee, and that fee goes straight to you. This means if a package gets lost or damaged, you can handle it right away instead of waiting weeks for a claim to be approved/denied by an external insurer.
And since actual loss/damage cases don’t happen very often, those protection fees usually cover the occasional refund/reship and bring in extra revenue. And you stay fully in control of the process instead of being constrained by a third-party’s requirements. It’s also deeply integrated with Shopify, so the whole experience is easier.
You’re not the only one running into issues with Shipsurance, a lot of merchants say the claims process ends up being way more manual than expected. The part that really slows things down is needing extra documents and the buyer having to fill out a long form, which many customers just won’t bother with.
A lot of merchants are moving to:
carrier insurance (UPS/FedEx/USPS Priority) for anything high-value, or
third-party protection apps where the claims flow is actually built for e-commerce customers, not old-school mail insurance.
If you ever want a smoother option that doesn’t involve customers filling out forms, ParcelPanel’s shipping protection tends to be a lot easier, claim flows stay inside the app and updates sync with the tracking page.
Hope this helps a bit! If it does, feel free to mark it as a solution so others can find it too
While I appreciate that you both offer products, I am not in the market for another product, nor do I want to be advertised to in a discussion forum. I want to express my displeasure to Shopify with the complexity of this integration. It isn’t really an integration per-se, just a button. Once you try to claim the insurance they re-ask for everything that ought to already be provided through the Shopify integration. It is slow, and not smooth.
