I want to start shipping from US to Canada. I know how to set it up on shopify but is there any help on how to charge for shipping and figuring out duties? Only shipping apparel.
hi @aveandliv You can try out carriers like UPS, USPS, FedEx, and DHL. These can provide estimated costs based on weight, dimensions, and destination. Regarding customs duties, the Canadian government’s website provides a tool to look up duty rates for specific products based on their Harmonized System (HS) code. You can find HS codes for apparel items here: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/menu-eng.html.
Please note that the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) offers duty-free treatment for many goods originating in North America. However, there are specific rules regarding the country of origin of the materials and the amount of processing done in the US. You can find more information about USMCA requirements on the Canadian government website here: https://ustr.gov/trade-agreements/free-trade-agreements/united-states-mexico-canada-agreement.
If you are looking for a single app that offers these carriers, then check out the Shopify Multi Carrier Shipping Label app. It is certified by UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL and many other global carriers.
@UjjawalS has mentioned some good carriers to start with, you’ll also want to decide whether you want to offer flat-rate shipping or calculated shipping based on carrier rates.
When it comes to duties and taxes, Canadian customers will be responsible for duties and taxes upon receipt of their order. You can inform them of potential charges, but they are generally outside your control. HS codes: Assign the right codes to apparel items. These codes help customs authorities determine applicable duties.
Some advice: Clearly state on your website that customers are responsible for duties and taxes.
Hi @aveandliv ,
Check our app’s Duties & Taxes feature that brings international duties & taxes estimates (based on HS codes and product’s country of manufacture) to your Shopify checkout. You can include them into the shipping rate (charge DDP) or just display estimates in shipping method’s description for information purposes.
