Shipping Pricing Creates Barrier for Small Businesses

Hi Shopify Community,

I’m a small business owner on the Basic plan struggling with a frustrating catch-22 that I think many of you can relate to.

The Problem: Real-time shipping calculations (showing actual Canada Post, UPS rates at checkout) are only available on the Advanced plan at $399/month. For a small business barely making sales, this is completely out of reach.

The Impact:

  • My conversion rate is stuck at 0.9% with an 80% bounce rate
  • Customers expect to see real shipping costs, not flat rates that feel arbitrary
  • I’ve implemented every workaround: free shipping built into prices, clear shipping policies, bundles for free shipping thresholds
  • Despite doing everything “right,” the lack of real-time shipping is likely costing me sales

The Catch-22: I need better shipping options to potentially grow my sales, but Shopify wants me to pay $399/month when I’m making minimal revenue. It’s like being priced out of the tools I need to actually grow.

My Ask: Could Shopify consider:

  • Adding basic shipping calculations to the $79 Shopify plan?
  • Offering shipping calculations as a $20-30/month add-on for Basic plan users?
  • Creating a “growth tier” between Basic and Advanced?

Shopify built its brand on “empowering entrepreneurs,” but this pricing structure actually prevents small businesses from accessing basic e-commerce functionality that could help them succeed.

Anyone else experiencing this? How are you handling shipping on lower-tier plans?

Thanks for listening,

Sheryl

This was written by Shopify’s own AI help. Literally its own AI telling them they are not supporting small businesses like they claim to be.

Hey @Sheryl89

This can be a common misconception based on how the Shopify bot replies when asking about live calculated rates - since it starts off AI, it will always attempt to upsell (which makes sense), but it is incorrect.

Any store can receive live calculated rates from a carrier of choice or from a third party rating app on the Shopify Plan level or above. There still is a catch-22, in that if you want those carriers (UPS, USPS, FedEx and others) or an app, there can be a cost of $20USD a month to access them, when you pay your Shopify subscription monthly. If you pay your Shopify subscription annually, you receive a price discount and the $20USD is waived.

If you have any questions, please do let me know.

Interesting response. I have both USPS and UPS accounts. My products are different sizes and weights. I was with 3dCart before Shopify and was able to designate size and weight of each product and then real time would calculate shipping for each one. Your telling me that this can be done now? Please clue me in as I am within inches of moving my website.

Let me add that I have the Grow plan and so far, I have not been able to figure this out in the 5 plus years I have been here.

Hey @Sheryl89,

You’re absolutely right, and this is a common pain point for small businesses on the Basic plan. Shopify currently restricts real-time carrier-calculated shipping (CCS) to the Advanced and Plus plans, which is tough when you’re just starting out or running lean.

Here are a couple of workarounds that do work without upgrading to Advanced:

  1. Third-party apps like ShipStation or EasyShip
These can calculate real-time rates and sync with your Shopify store. They also give you more control over label printing and fulfillment workflows.
  2. Add CCS to your Basic or Shopify plan
You can get carrier-calculated shipping on the Basic plan by paying an extra ~$20/month or switching to annual billing and requesting it via support. It’s not publicly advertised, but Shopify Support will activate it if you ask.
  3. Use Shopify Shipping with discounted rates
If you’re using Shopify Shipping (Canada Post, UPS, DHL), even on the Basic plan, customers will see Shopify’s pre-negotiated rates. Just make sure you’re using their fulfillment network or printing labels from Shopify.

Your feedback is valid. Shopify should offer better shipping tools natively without locking them behind a $399/month wall.

Let me know if this helps. Send me your store link so I can take a look.

So if I pay an additional 20.00 a month on my Grow plan, I can have the CCS added and do real time calculations?

Do I use my accounts through UPS and USPS?

Do variations apps interfere?

I did figure out how to get it to calculate as of now and it’s doing the Shopify discounted. Not a fan to be honest.

Thanks for your help!

Hey @ReneeM! Yes, you can access real-time carrier-calculated shipping rates on the Shopify Grow plan by adding $20/month.

Since you’re not keen on using Shopify’s discounted shipping rates and prefer to ship using your own carrier accounts, I’d recommend trying out our PH MultiCarrier Shipping Label app.

If you’d like to connect both your UPS and USPS accounts, you can go ahead with the $19/month plan or higher, which supports multiple carrier accounts. With the app, you can:

  • Display live shipping rates at checkout
  • Print shipping labels, fulfil orders, and track shipments, all directly within your Shopify dashboard

Also, if you choose the yearly billing option, Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS) is included at no additional cost, saving you the $20/month you’d otherwise pay with the monthly Grow plan.

The Basic plan offers real-time carrier rates, but only if you use Shopify Payments and sign up for an annual plan, at which point you can request the feature. You may also want to use apps like Intuitive Shipping or Bespoke Shipping for live shipping rates based on weight, zones and carriers, without the need to upgrade to Advanced. Hope this helps.
