Shipping Profile automatic selection based on product template page

Topic summary

A user is seeking a way to automatically assign shipping profiles based on product templates in their store.

Current Setup:

  • Three product templates exist, each requiring different shipping methods: free shipping, no shipping, and flat rate shipping
  • A fourth flat rate option may be added later
  • Currently, products must be manually assigned to shipping profiles by searching and selecting them individually

The Problem:

  • When adding new products, the user must select the product template AND separately assign the shipping profile
  • This manual process is time-consuming and inefficient

Desired Solution:

  • Automatic assignment where selecting template X automatically applies shipping profile Y
  • Preferably a free or low-cost solution

As the title says really, I have 3 different types of product page (templates) for products eligible for free shipping, no shipping, flat rate shipping, in the future they may be a 4th flat rate shipping also.

These need to relate to the shipping profiles, eg General profile for free shipping, no shipping available for the no shipping, and a flat rate for the flat rate.

I see I can manually go though all the flat rate products on the shipping profile and assign them to the flat rate shipping profile by searching for them and ticking the box, and also the same with the no shipping products.

But is there a way for free or little, to automate this? seems ridiculous that if I am adding a new product I have to select the product profile template in the product page, then mess around going to the shipping profiles page to add that product individually every time. It should be simple to say if template X is chosen, use profile Y or whatever?! Right?

Hi Can anybody shed any light on this for me?
