I’m not sure there is a solution out there that won’t require Shopify to actually add functionality. I’d really like to be able to use the Shop platform, but it won’t pass through my made-to-order messaging. As a clothing brand, nearly every listing has some variation that is only available as MTO. It is not feasible to make separate listings for variants that are in-stock vs MTO. This functionality needs to push through from my store to Shop - if a product is at 0 units and continue selling is active, give us some customization on the ATC button so we can accurately manage expectations!
Agree — the main issue is that this logic has to flow through from Shopify to Shop. If a variant is at 0 inventory and “continue selling” is enabled, the storefront should be able to carry that context through, so the ATC button can reflect MTO/backorder messaging instead of showing a generic in-stock state.
For brands with mixed inventory and made-to-order variants, separate listings usually aren’t realistic, so the better fix is variant-level messaging and button copy that adapts to stock status.
That would make expectations clearer for customers and reduce mismatches between the store and Shop.
I agree this would be a valuable enhancement. For stores with made-to-order products, the ability to customize the Add to Cart button or display a dynamic “Made to Order” label in the Shop app would help set clear expectations without creating duplicate product listings. Until Shopify adds native support, there isn’t a clean workaround that fully preserves this messaging across the Shop platform.
