Shopify 404 bulk redirects

Topic summary

A user is struggling to bulk upload 766 404 redirects to Shopify using a CSV file exported from Google Search Console. Despite following Shopify’s format requirements—removing the domain and using relative paths like /collections/updated-best-sellers to /collections/all—the uploads continue to fail.

Troubleshooting attempts:

  • Confirmed both old and new URLs share the same domain
  • Verified proper formatting (relative paths without full URLs)
  • Attempted uploads through Shopify’s Navigation > Redirects section

Key suggestions from community:

  • Check for detailed error messages in Shopify’s email notifications to the logged-in user
  • Try exporting CSV from Google Sheets instead of Excel, as formatting differences may cause issues
  • Consider using third-party redirect apps (SEO Wizzard, SEOAnt) that support bulk CSV imports and wildcard redirects

The issue remains unresolved, with the root cause of the upload failure still unclear. The user has not shared specific error messages or the original file for further diagnosis.

Hello all,

I currently have 766 Not Found (404) pages in my search console. I want to redirect the pages and have been trying to in bulk but haven’t been successful. I have attached a screenshot sample of the CVS file I am attempting to use. Can anyone tell what I am doing incorrectly?

Thanks!

Hi @MSchaffer30 ,

Can you please share what steps you followed? so I can help you in redirection easily.

I exported the redirects from search console into a csv. I removed the first part of the url per the parameters of Shopify’s example csv. I matched the url to the appropriate page i want them to go and then attempted to upload the file into shopify

Did you setup URLs under Shopify redirection from Navigation > Redirects?

Yes, I did

Yes I did

Is it possible to provide original file that you exported from search console?

No, I cant do that

Okay! So make sure old and new URL should have same domain.

They do have the same domain, do I use the entire URL? ie.

Redirect From:

https://www.xyz.com/collections/updated-best-sellers

Redirect To:

https://www.xyz.com/collections/all

No you don’t need to use full URL. if old URL shows 404 then only it will redirect to new URL. Make sure to setup URL like below.

Ex.

Old URL

/collections/updated-best-sellers

New URL

/collections/all

That is how I have it, but it will not work

How are you generating the CSV?
I find that export from Google Sheets to CSV has some magic formatting that works better. Excel to CSV I have struggled with in the past.

When upload, what errors are you getting?
FYI Shopify will email you a more detailed error list to the logged in user.

Hello

You can use an URL redirection app like https://apps.shopify.com/seo-wizzard for redirecting the 404 errors. The app also supports wildcards and it is completely free.

Hi @MSchaffer30

The CSV file you exported from Google Search Console looks good, but maybe you redirected them to the wrong place.

Just wonder if you need an APP to do this work for you. If so, please kindly consider SEOAnt, it has one feature called Broken Links and supports importing CSV or XLS files to do redirections in bulk.
