Shopify Analytics session drop in the recent weeks

hi here,

I’ve already read that many merchants have been affected by the session drop in the recent weeks.

Anyone solved?

here what happened to me

Nov 8th / 9th > drop started probably after the Google core update

Nov 11th > first ticket opened to flag the issue

Nov 17th > no feedback from Shopify support and ‘desperate’ switch to ‘collect data before consent’ for a couple of days to see the effects. In the meantime I checked with my Cookie Banner provider (LegalBlink) and as GA4 is anonymized the ‘before consent’ collection should be OK for at least Google data collection.

Nov 23rd > ticket closed by Shopify saying the issue has been solved

Dec 9th > drop identified again and new ticket opened. Feedback is that the issue is a long term well known issue and they’re working on it

Comparing GA and Shopify (even if I know the platform differences and all the comparison limitations) are scary as in GA there’s soething like 100 and in Shopify 0 or 4/5.

Anyone solved? Anyone has other feedbacks?

thanks

A lot of people have the same problem. Solution seems that you have to use the shopify provided cookie banner app or use “collect before consent”. Shopify rolled out a change on 8th November which blocked GA4 data unless you have a cookie consent banner, and seemingly third party provided cookie banner apps don’t seem to be working with shopifys update

thanks!

the shopify privacy app doesn’t have the way to see / report who gave the consent. I thought this was a GDPR necessary point, to be able to ‘demonstrate’ who gave the consent.

Or is it the Shopify Privacy App reliable from a GDPR point of view?

thanks!

I think the point of the shopify app is if no consent is given, then no data is shipped out to GA4. By definition then, all resulting data in GA4 would have there because compliance is given.

As for if that’s gdpr compliant, I can’t say…
