Shopify App Install Conversion Tracking using Google

Topic summary

The discussion centers on tracking Shopify app installations as conversions in Google Ads campaigns.

Initial Challenge:
A developer sought guidance on measuring app install campaign performance through Google Ads, unable to find clear documentation.

Proposed Solution:
Importing GA4 install data into Google Ads was suggested as the simplest approach. One participant mentioned using Mantle (a Shopify analytics tool) with a potential extension for Google Ads integration, though specifics weren’t provided.

Key Technical Steps (Resolved):

  1. Link GA4 property to Google Ads via Tools > Data Manager
  2. Grant Editor/Admin access to Google Ads account within GA4 Property Access Management
  3. Mark “Add app button” as a Key Event in GA4 (required for Google Ads recognition)
  4. Import the key event as a conversion action in Google Ads under Goals > Summary

Important Limitations:

  • Only new conversions are tracked; no historical data syncs
  • Initial sync takes approximately 2 days
  • App listings are web properties, not app properties in Google Ads

Open Questions:
A follow-up user implemented the steps and is awaiting results, asking whether to rename conversion events and if Conversion ID is needed in the App Submission tracking section.

Hi all!

We want to setup Google Ads for our apps and measure campaign performance using App Store Installs.

I have searched through Shopify and Google, could not find a solution. Can someone help/guide?

Hi @jagadeesh_artos ,

Not that I’m a huge pro here, but I recently had to deal with the same task, and the easiest way I found was just importing your Shopify installs data from GA4 into Google Ads — like this: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2375435?hl=en

We also recently switched to Mantle, and I was trying to figure out how to push Mantle data into Google Ads. Their support said they don’t do it directly, but there’s an extension that’s supposed to handle it (though I imagine it’s not going to be cheap).

I tried doing it but the events do not show up for some weird reason. I will wait sometime and see if that changes.

Already use Mantle. Can you let me know what that extension is?

Takes a couple of days for GA and Google Ads to sync. Plus, only the new events will start showing up, not their previous history.

Which specific extension - they didn’t mention:)

  1. How many days did it take for you? I have linked two accounts which do not have any data and are linked 5 days before.
  2. Did you create a new firebase project for this?
  3. If its ok, can you ask for what the extension is? Currently if I wanted to link Mantle Data, I’d probably need to use APIs

I think it took about two days for the GA goal to appear in the Google Ads goals settings. But like I mentioned, there’s no historical sync — conversions only started getting tracked once they actually happened.

I’m in marketing, not development, so I’m not really sure why Firebase would be needed here. I connected the two directly.

As for Mantle — you can reach out to them directly if you have any questions. They’re pretty responsive.

Thanks to @AlphaSale_Kathy and @L_Gerklev on Shopify Dev Community for helping me figure this one out. I am writing this solution to help fellow users on how this is solved.

  1. Ensure you already have GA4 setup with your Shopify App on Shopify Partners

  2. In Google Ads, Link your GA4 Property

    1. Go to Tools > Data Manager > Connect Product > Google Analytics (GA4) & Firebase > Select GA4 Property > Link Account
  3. In Google Analytics, Set Editor/Admin level access for Google Ads Account

    1. Select your GA4 Property
    2. Go to Admin > Property Access Management
    3. Set Admin/Editor Access to the following Google Ads Account: administrator, read only, standard (not sure if all 3 are required but I did)
  4. Set “Add app button” as Key Event in Google Analytics. Google Ads only recognizes key events.

    1. Select your GA4 Property
    2. Go to Admin > Events > Set “Add app button” as key event if not enabled
  5. Import key event to Google Ads to start measuring conversions

    1. Go to Google Ads > Goals > Summary > Create Conversion Action
    2. Under “Import > Google Analytics 4 Properties > Web”, Select “Add app button” key event and click on “Import Data”
  6. Now you’ve successfully created a conversion action to track for your Google Ads on your Shopify App Listing.

Notes:

  1. Only new conversion actions are recorded and shown in Google Ads. Historical Data is not available
  2. In case the events do not show up, check if the data stream is receiving traffic by checking Admin > Data Streams > Web Property
  3. I was not able to find the events data because I was searching to add actions under “App > GA4 > Events” inside Google Ads while the App Listing is a web property.

Thanks for your guide. Before reading your guide, i have done all the steps except for the 3 Step which is: In Google Analytics, Set Editor/Admin level access for Google Ads Account

And there is no events is imported from GA4 to Google Ads (My App Install event is working fine on GA4).

I found your guide and i have implemented this 3rd step. I hope this will work. I am waiting for the result.

And i have 2 small question:

  1. Do you rename the conversion event when you import to match its name in GA4?
  2. Is it neccessary to put the Conversion ID in the App Submission page (Tracking section?)
