Shopify as a B2B Industrial and Commercial Marketplace — Starting with Category-Based Structured Attributes for Worldwide Inventory

Shopify has the potential to become a true B2B industrial and commercial marketplace — comparable to eBay, Grainger, or McMaster-Carr — but built on Shopify’s infrastructure where many businesses and sellers advertise and sell products in an organized, searchable online catalogue. Sellers earn commissions on each other’s products, manage everything from one location, and maintain accurate inventory across their own storefront and the shared marketplace simultaneously. The potential is enormous, but realizing it requires foundational improvements to how products are structured and discovered.

The Core Feature Request: Category-Based Structured Attributes with Buyer Filtering

When a merchant selects a product category (e.g., Transformer, Switchgear, Electrical Enclosure, Office Equipment, Safety Supplies), Shopify should present category-specific attribute fields — Primary Voltage, Power Rating (KVA), Enclosure Rating, Phase, Size, Material, etc. — that are structured, standardized, and filterable on the storefront. This replaces freeform descriptions and tags with a consistent spec language that buyers can actually search and filter by.

Why This Matters for Shopify Collective

Shopify Collective is already moving toward a multi-seller marketplace model. But without standardized category attributes, products from different suppliers use inconsistent terminology for the same specifications — making cross-supplier search and filtering unreliable. Structured category attributes would create a common spec language across all Collective suppliers, enabling buyers to reliably filter and compare products regardless of which supplier listed them. This is infrastructure-level important for Collective to work at scale for technical, industrial, and commercial products.

The Bigger Picture

Shopify already has the building blocks — Collective, Marketplace Connect, Product Taxonomy, Metafields, and multi-channel inventory sync. What’s needed to close the gap toward a true B2B marketplace:

  • Turnkey marketplace storefront with browse and filter tools to quickly find exact matches
  • Category-intelligent structured attributes
  • Buyer-facing filtering across multiple suppliers
  • Automated commission and payout management at scale
  • Seller onboarding and governance tools

Shopify Collective is effectively v1 of this vision. With continued investment in structured data and marketplace infrastructure, Shopify could become the dominant platform for B2B industrial and commercial commerce — attracting sellers who today default to eBay Business, Grainger, or building their own catalogue sites.

Who benefits: Any merchant selling technical, spec-driven, or category-rich products — electrical equipment, mechanical components, HVAC, plumbing, safety equipment, office supplies, commercial furniture, janitorial supplies, and beyond.

An additional note, it should be easier to submit recommendations without having to create an additional login to a community forum.

Additional clarification, many high value surplus inventory items have very long lead times for manufacturing and delivery, ie Electrical Power Transformers, yet items may be stored as surplus inventory at any Seller Company location anywhere in the world. Shopify Collective has an opportunity to develop a master catalogue of many surplus items for Buyers to search in one catalogue and allow Seller’s to collaborate and earn commissions and profits for sales. There are many examples of categorized online store catalogues, but the consolidation of inventory to a combined catalogue, maintained, advertised and synchronized with inventory from multiple Sellers has yet to be accomplished.

Hi @ASCNB .

Hope you are doing great!

That’s a great one, post it on the Shopify community idea board.

Use metafields and product taxonomy as a workaround until Shopify builds this natively.

I learned that Shopify has a $50,000 USD price limit to advertise on Shopify Shop. This price limit should be increased if Shopify wants to expand into the market of advertising surplus equipment for industry and construction.
