Shopify Channel App Tag in Google Tag Manager never detected but app shows setup correctly

Topic summary

Issue: A “Shopify Channel App” tag appears in Google Tag Manager (GTM) but shows no data received. The store’s Google & YouTube Shopify app reports being set up and connected correctly.

Context: GTM is used to deploy and monitor tracking tags. The Google & YouTube app is Shopify’s integration for Google services (e.g., ads/analytics). The discrepancy raises concerns about whether the GTM tag is redundant.

Key questions:

  • Is the “Shopify Channel App” tag necessary if no data is recorded?
  • Can it be safely deleted without affecting Google/YouTube integrations?
  • Why was this tag created in GTM in the first place?

Latest input: Another participant reports the same unexplained “Shopify Channel App” tag.

Status: No solutions or confirmations provided. No actions decided. The thread remains open with unanswered questions and no confirmed impact of deleting the tag.

Hi,

I’ve been doing some work trying to increase my site speed.

Whilst checking Google tag manager I’ve noticed I have a tag that it says is for “Shopify Channel App” but there has never been any data received by Google.

The Google & Youtube app in Shopify shows everything is setup and connected correctly so unsure whether I can just delete this tag as it appears to be redundant.

Does anyone have any experience with something similar?

Thanks.

The same for me here. I am not sure why I have a “Shopify Channel App” tag created.
