Shopify Checkout Broken on Mojave and Earlier and Shopify Will Not Fix

We’ve been with Shopify for 16 years and have built a known brand and community. Today a customer emailed us that he was not able to check out - the page is blank. We tried, on our computers that are on Mojave, and we were also unable to check out. Shopify broke checkout due to outdated browsers and there is no solution other than the customer to upgrade their Mac OS (which is what is required to upgrade Chome / Safari).

Our analytics tell us there are thousands of people per year, and thousands in revenue, being made from older OS that simply can no longer purchase from us. (Many music producers park their computers at old OS).

This is a disaster. I don’t know what to do besides leave. Does anybody think Shopify will listen? Is this an issue for anybody else? I understand it’s a small amount of users on these platforms but in 2026 I refuse to have a website that forces customers to upgrade their computer’s OS just to purchase from us. I know I wouldn’t do that.

Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Here’s what support said:

After coordinating with our Internal Support team, I have confirmed the following:

The Technical Cause: The error you noted (Duplicate capture group name) stems from a JavaScript update in the Shopify checkout that is not supported by the legacy browser versions found on macOS Mojave.

Support Policy: To maintain security and modern performance standards, Shopify’s checkout follows our supported browser requirements. Because this is a platform-wide infrastructure update, we are unable to roll back the script or “downgrade” the checkout for individual stores.

Next Steps: Since this is a browser-level limitation, the best course of action is to advise these specific customers to update their browsers to the latest version possible or to complete their purchase on a different device.

I understand this is a difficult situation to manage with your customers, but I wanted to provide this clarity so you can advise them on the best workaround.

Considering Apple ended their support for Mohave 5 years ago, I’d say I agree.. Backwards compatibility can only go so far, and it only stands to reason that outdated and unsupported software be updated to stay compatible with current technology.

Yeah I think so as well. It’s a difficult situation honestly but there’s got to be a limit in terms of operating system compatibility unfortunately for safety reasons.

Look, if this were a software product people were opting into, understanding the system requirements neccesary for it to run - yes, I understand that (but even then many companies have legacy options). But this is a checkout page on a website that was working perfectly before, for over a decade. I don’t need complex features, I just need a website that doesn’t discriminate who can buy and who cannot. This sets a dangerous precedence - I am making 30% of my total revenue from OS 10.15 users, for instance. Shopify could easily have a legacy checkout option available to merchants for me. I refuse to continue to tell customers who email us that they can’t buy from us anymore.

This is unacceptable because Shopify fully controls the checkout code and merchants have no ability to modify or fix it ourselves. If Shopify intends to drop support for older browsers or operating systems, merchants need clear advance notice so we can prepare and warn customers. Breaking checkout without warning leaves us unable to process legitimate orders while sales are actively being lost.

Browser updates and software updates are not just about adding new features. It also patches security flaws that is needed. I understand your fustration but this is nothing new. Companies end support for softwares or recommend you update for a reason. If there was a data leak and sensentive information is leaked, who do you think is responsible for that? As others stated on here legacy options has its limits. Do you know how much man power and resources it will take to please everyone on every legacy option?

Take a step back and think.

I’m sure that shopify has posted this somewhere if they are not supporting certain browsers or OS. (someone tell me if im wrong).

That’s understandable. I wouldn’t upgrade from XP for the longest time. However, for a Shopify store, it’s really not setting precedent at all. Times change. Tech changes. They actually do state they only support the last two browser versions of the main ones. https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-admin/supported-browsers

Here is a thread about this exact issue from a few years ago My Customers Can't Procced To Checkout In Safari

I doubt they could even accommodate a legacy checkout. OS 10.15 isn’t PCI compliant so it’s not entirely all on Shopify. The various payment processors and gateways have requirements too, and as @prov1 said about security patches, this is probably the single biggest reason for Shopify to not support it.

Sucks for sure. If that big of a chunk of you’re customer base are on old browsers and you’re losing big business, nothing wrong in looking into other options. Just know other platforms probably have similar policies. But keep in mind, mobile shopping is always an option, and unless you’re living under a rock you have an up-to-date phone.
