Has anyone else noticed that the Shopify checkout no longer auto-populates the customer’s country?
It defaults to USA if you are accepting USD.
This is a problem for 2 reasons.
- The Google address suggestions will only be USA addresses unless the customer changes the country, but the country dropdown is at the bottom of the form and often not noticed until they are finished entering the address.
- They may think that the store is for USA only.
I have spoken with Shopify support multiple times and the only solution they offer is to install the Geolocation app. The problem with this is that every visitor gets hit with a pop-up as soon as they view your website.
Shopify support says the reason for this is because IP-based location is not always accurate. I would much rather have the country at checkout be inaccurate every now and then rather than have every customer hit with a pop-up as soon as they enter the store… And on top of that, the Geolocation app runs off IP location tracking, so if the pop-up comes up saying your store ships to a country they don’t live in they will be even more confused.
Does anyone know a solution to this issue?
