AMA announced for November 7, 2024 (9am–5pm EST), text-based only, focused on the U.S. migration from PayPal Express to PayPal Wallet within Shopify Payments. Links to documentation and prior AMA are provided.
Migration status: Stores are being migrated in batches. A shop not yet migrated will likely move post-holiday season. Shopify states all eligible stores will be migrated, implying no option to remain on PayPal Express.
Operational changes: PayPal Wallet uses Shopify Payments credentials, not existing PayPal account credentials. New PayPal-paid orders after migration won’t appear in PayPal Business Center; manage payouts, refunds, and disputes in Shopify admin. PayPal Seller Protection still applies. Legacy PayPal Express orders continue to be serviced via the PayPal account.
Business impacts raised: Merchants concerned about funds depositing to bank accounts vs. PayPal balances and billing confusion. Shopify offers direct assistance and timeline confirmation via DM.
Checkout UI extensions: Shopify says no change to the PayPal button rendering and no anticipated impact to Checkout UI. A participant challenges this based on prior Express Payments limitations; clarification appears ongoing.
Open items: Confirmation of exact migration timing per shop (via DM) and how to handle PayPal account service fees without incoming PayPal funds remain unresolved.
