Shopify Custom Pixel vs Google & YouTube app

Topic summary

Core question: Can the Shopify Google & YouTube app handle Enhanced Conversions and Google Ads Dynamic Remarketing, and how to verify Enhanced Conversion data when using a Shopify Custom Pixel with Google Tag Manager (GTM) given preview-mode limits?

Capabilities and reliability:

  • Response indicates the Google & YouTube app does track Enhanced Conversions, but it can intermittently stop working.
  • Dynamic remarketing is mentioned as implemented in a manual setup, not explicitly confirmed for the app itself.

Validation/preview constraints:

  • GTM preview mode cannot inspect a Shopify Custom Pixel because it runs in a sandbox for security; code won’t be visible in browser developer tools.
  • No alternative verification method was provided in-thread.

Advice and resources:

  • Recommendation to manually install the tracking code (outside relying solely on the app) for stability.
  • A YouTube link is provided to a “working code” implementation that includes remarketing.

Key terms:

  • Enhanced Conversions: Uses hashed first‑party customer data to improve conversion attribution in Google Ads.
  • Dynamic Remarketing: Serves ads with products users viewed on the site.
  • GTM: A tag management tool; Preview mode tests tag firing.

Status: Partially answered; verification approach remains unresolved.

Hi, I have been using Google and YouTube app/sales channel for tracking conversions in Google Ads now I want to install on my Shop a custom Pixel for Google Tag Manager and Datalayer, because I am not sure, if Google and YouTube app is able to track the enhanced conversions or do Google Ads Dynamic Re-marketing?

Also you can not use Google Tag Manager preview mode with shopify custom pixel, to check if you send the right enhanced conversion data to google ads.

Is there another way to check it?

Thank you in advance for the answer.

I believe the Google and youtube app tracks enhanced conversions yes. However it sometimes stops working, so I recommend manually installing the code.

Regarding preview mode, yes you can not see the code, as it runs in sandbox mode, for security purposes. No need to view the results in developer tools as I have already developed a working code. And remarketing is also installed.
