Shopify Discount Codes Exempt for sale items

Topic summary

Lack of a feature to make discount codes exempt from sale items. Users want a simple option (e.g., a checkbox) so codes don’t apply to already discounted products.

Recent update: A participant checked for changes and confirms nothing has changed. There’s no apparent response from Shopify.

Impact: Merchants either inflate sale prices or spend hours manually adjusting sale prices whenever they issue a discount code to prevent “stacking” (combining a code with an existing sale price). This is seen as unfair to customers who don’t use codes.

Demand: Multiple complaints and repeated requests persist for exclusion controls on discount codes.

Status: Unresolved and ongoing. No official acknowledgement or timeline mentioned.

It blows my mind that Shopify STILLLLL after thousands of complaints have not added the ability to create a discount code, and then have a box you can check to say ‘cannot be used on sale items’

This is one of the biggest complaints I hear lately for merchants having to put stock on sale and everyone has to inflate their sale prices thus punishing the people who don’t use discount codes on everything.

agreed! We want this and have complained numerous times. I was actually just popping in to see what was going on with it and if anything has changed?

Nothing has changed. It’s shocking that they won’t respond because everyone I know who runs Shopify has the same problem and is constantly skirting around it spending hours adjusting Sale prices every time they put out a discount code knowing that everyone will stack the code onto sale items. It makes no sense. So frustrating.
