Shopify email customization for digital downloads sucks

So I really hate the shopify email confirmations my customers get for their digital download and my Filemonk app won’t override the shopify emails and I cannot disable the shopify ones without being a giant company that pays 2K more a month. I’m a small business. I don’t even hardly make 2K a month. So this is very disappointing that you cannot customize this when you pay unless you pay A LOT for the high plan. Is there a workaround here? I’m pretty annoyed with this.

Hey @sgreer76

Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t allow you to fully disable transactional emails like order confirmations unless you’re on Shopify Plus, which is frustrating for small businesses for digital delivery.

The best workaround is to edit your order confirmation template and strip it down to a minimal “thank you” receipt, then add a line like “Your download link will arrive in a separate email shortly.” This way customers know to expect two emails and won’t be confused.

It’s not ideal, but it’s the cleanest solution without paying Plus pricing.

I agree with @Moeed. Shopify’s native offering for digital downloads is very limited. For clients who need more control, I have had success using third party digital delivery apps. SkyPilot is the solution I ultimately selected for one client’s digital download. It includes its own email delivery system and allows significantly more flexibility in email template customization.

It adds cost, but it is minimal compared to upgrading to Plus.

Yes I use a 3rd party app and their emails are awesome and totally customizable, Shopify’s aren’t even easy to customize and it’s limited to what you can customize. It’s awful.

Yeah super infuriating that I pay what is a lot for my small business yet I can’t customize some things because I”m not a big enough business. Not sure why that should matter for customization for your site. My entire business is selling digital downloads so that’s really awful for me to deal with this.

On/off capability next to each customer notification email (like it is for local delivery) would be a great feature request. But since it’s free (comes with plan)…… might as well use it, customize it the best you can :man_shrugging:

To try and get actual feature requests as part of regular plans then contact and ACTUAL shopify support advisor.

Location location location , complaining here does little more than take the steam out of you with sycophantic replies or feckless “me toos!” making you more ignorable and less likely to champion your own causes in the right channels.

Shopify was not built as a first class tool for digital products.

:judge: You want first class features for digital-goods then use an ecommerce system specifically built for that.
Shoehorning it into shopify is flawed from the jump.

That’s the point, extra features cost money it has to be built it has to be maintained.
It’s an eye rolling cliche for merchants to use rhetoric that their specific needs should be greater than servering 6 MILLION other merchants collective needs.

Don’t shake your fist at clouds worth billions.
You’re a business use the proper tools, shopify isn’t some magical hammer to provide everything for every nail.
Getting infuriated about this is literally self defeating, when you could instead be more effective by voting with your wallet.
If shopify as a tool does not meet the business requirements then use a DIFFERENT tool.

Um okee dokee. But I can still be annoyed and mad. So thanks for invalidating that.

For digital products, I would separate this into two different problems.

The first is the Shopify email problem: the order confirmation email and the download-app email can feel disconnected, so the buyer does not know which message matters.

The second is the first-minute buyer problem: after checkout, can a normal customer immediately tell where the file is, what email to expect, and what to do if the download email is delayed or filtered?

A practical QA pass I would run before launch:

  • place one clean test order with a non-admin email
    • confirm which message arrives first
      • make the Shopify confirmation say that download access may arrive separately
        • make the file or ZIP name match the product name exactly
          • add a short START HERE note inside the download
            • prepare one saved reply for “I did not get my download”
              • test the flow on mobile, because many customers will open the email there first
            • This will not fully solve Shopify’s email limits, but it usually reduces the confusion that turns into support tickets and refund requests.
