Shopify filtering app with sub-collections

Hello,

we are currently developing a project that has go live for July/August 2022, what we want to achieve, is to have a simple sub-collection with images above collection content with products. Something like this:

When you click on mobiles and smart watches, you are then shown the sub-collections, such as mobiles, accessories, which makes it easier for people to browse.

Our current theme in development that we decided for (Ella) has this functionality, but we are not sure if we want to keep using the default filtering and search that is built in the theme.

But so far, we weren´t able to find a solution that would deliver this functionality for collections and be user friendly and would work with filtering based on metafields, not tags. Does anybody have any idea how to make this happen?
