Im setting up a relatively basic Flow abandonment checkout (3 email reminders, I used the flow from template, and added 2 more emails with discount codes). Im having problem with the first email, and some error I cant figure out what the problem is. I made some changes to the email design, but nothing fancy, just added a picture. Im attaching the pictures of how my flow looks like and the error Im getting.
Topic summary
Issue: The first email in a Shopify Flow “abandoned checkout” sequence throws an error after minor edits (added image and logo) despite using a template and drag‑and‑drop sections.
Diagnosis: The error indicates an email section incompatible with the CHECKOUT event type (abandoned checkout). Test sends render correctly, suggesting the problem is not design/rendering but a template section mismatch.
Guidance: Ensure every section in the email is compatible with abandoned checkout emails. If unclear, start from a simple template and add elements incrementally to locate the failing section.
Specific fix: Use the “Abandoned Checkout” email section and remove any “Abandoned cart” section in the email template. This alignment with the CHECKOUT type should resolve the error.
Status: A likely cause and fix were identified; confirmation of resolution from the original poster is pending. Screenshots were provided to show the flow, error, and email layouts, but the key issue is template section compatibility.
HI @Dubi ,
That error suggests that there is a section in the email your configured that does not work with the CHECKOUT type. It would be worthwhile to look at the email you configured and make sure each of the sections in it are compatible with abandoned checkout emails. If it’s not obvious, try starting with a simple email template, retry the run and expand on it until you either hit the error again or it’s working as desired.
Hope that helps!
Hi Dave, I have just added an image element to the default email template and a logo. Im also attaching other 2 emails from the series, but since I used only elements from the drag and drop builder (started with prebuilt template, without any code added), I dont understand why would that be a problem? And how can I create an email to avoid errors, is there any tutorial with dos and don’ts?
- email:
I didnt mention that, but of course i did It prior than asking here for help, I tested all 3 emails, and they all came flawlessly to my emal. They arrived in seconds, and look just as they look in Flow setup, no problem with size, rendering or anything of that sort. I really dont know where else to look for the problem

- email:
Hi as mentioned by Dave, it looks like you are using an incompatible email section when configuring the email template.
Please use “Abandoned Checkout” as the email section and remove “abandoned cart” section.
Once you change that in the email template, the error should disappear.
