As I would prefer to keep everything in Shopify right now, I think it would be extremely useful to have native Shopify Flow triggers for Shopify Messaging email engagement events — specifically “email opened” and “email link clicked”.
As far as I am aware, there’s no way to track email engagement natively in Shopify to build unengaged/sunset segments or tag engaged customers. The workaround of using purchase history as a proxy doesn’t work well for businesses where customers buy seasonally or for special occasions.
With these triggers, merchants could:
- Tag engaged customers automatically
- Build accurate unengaged segments for sunset flows
- Run re-engagement campaigns based on real email behavior
This would make Shopify Messaging a truly self-contained email marketing solution without needing third-party platforms like Klaviyo just for engagement tracking.
Shopify is not meant to be your all-in-one business management. If it was, there’d be no need for anything else and the monthly and transaction fees would skyrocket. Shopify’s native email, flow, and campaign is sufficient for basic needs. If you want more, there are plenty of third party apps.
That said, segments can show email engagement
And there are Flow companion apps with more triggers.
Thank you for help on the segments.
For now my email list is small and Klaviyo started to charge me and doing more in Shopfy right now fit my business model.
Since your list is still small and the Klaviyo cost is the real trigger here, you can probably get most of what you need without a native “email opened” webhook at all. Build a Segment using the email opened/clicked conditions Maximus3 showed screenshots of, save it, then use Shopify Flow’s “Customer entered/left segment” trigger off that segment. That gets you automatic tagging plus an unengaged/sunset segment on a schedule, all inside Shopify.
The one thing that setup can’t do is react in real time (tag someone the instant they click, not on the next segment refresh) - that still needs a companion Flow app or your own webhook receiver, since there’s no native trigger for the click/open event itself yet. For a small list though, the segment + Flow route should cover tagging and sunset flows without paying for Klaviyo.
