shopify Inbox : How to edit the word "chat with us"

Hello,

I have two stores, both using the Inbox app. However, the “chat with me” display is in Traditional Chinese on one store, but not on the other — such as the text shown in the yellow boxes. Since these are default messages, I’m unable to edit them from the [Chat settings] in the backend.

.

These settings were configured by someone who managed the store before, and I don’t know how to change them to display in Traditional Chinese. I hope someone can help me figure out how to modify the text in the yellow boxes to show in Traditional Chinese.

Thank you.

Can you give me collaborator access, so I can change it back to Chinese text?

Hello @VinaH !

Shopify Inbox uses default text for chat UI elements like “Chat with us,” “Typically replies in X hours,” and other system-generated messages. These texts are based on:

  1. The language of the store’s theme (locale)

  2. The visitor’s browser language

  3. Shopify Inbox language settings, which are not fully editable from the Inbox app UI

Here’s How to Fix It:#### Step 1: Check the Storefront Language Setting

This affects how Shopify Inbox determines which language to use.

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes

  2. Click “Actions > Edit default theme content”

  3. Look at the default language — make sure it’s set to Traditional Chinese (zh-TW)

If it’s in English or Simplified Chinese, that may explain why Inbox uses English on one store.

Step 2: Change Your Theme’s Locale to Traditional Chinese1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize

  1. Open the theme editor

  2. In the theme editor, click on the top dropdown (where it says “Home page” or similar)

  3. Choose “Languages”

  4. Select “Traditional Chinese (zh-TW)”

Step 3: Set the Preferred Language in Shopify Inbox (if available)

While most Inbox messages aren’t manually editable, some may adapt to the primary language of your store or the Shopify admin language settings.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin > Inbox

  2. Look for any “Chat settings”Appearance

  3. If you see language-related options (depends on version), set it to Traditional Chinese

Step 4: Add a Manual Greeting (if needed)

If the default “Chat with us” line is still not in Traditional Chinese, consider overriding it with a custom greeting:

  1. Go to Inbox > Chat settings > Greeting message

  2. Write: 您好!歡迎光臨,有任何問題都歡迎與我們聯繫。

Although the yellow system texts may remain in English, the custom messages help keep the user experience consistent.

Hi @Vi-WizzCommerce

Thanks for your reply,

I think I roughly understand your explanation. In my case, under “Online Store > Themes > Customize”, there is no option to edit “Languages.”
The only place I can check the store’s default language is in “Settings > Languages,” as shown in the attached screenshot.

Since the default text in the Inbox app follows the store’s default language and cannot be customized manually, this is how I’ve understood the situation.

Could it possibly be the case?

Thank you.
