Shopify Markets and Geolocation App

Topic summary

A Canadian merchant encountered an unexpected geolocation issue where a long-time Canadian customer was automatically shown USD pricing and unable to enter a Canadian address when attempting to checkout. The merchant has already ruled out common causes like VPN usage, Starlink connection, or the customer traveling to the US.

Potential explanation:

  • The customer’s ISP may have recently reassigned IP addresses from a different country
  • Geolocation databases can take time to update with new IP assignments

Recommended next steps:

  • Monitor whether this is a one-time occurrence or recurring problem
  • Check with the customer again after some time has passed
  • Determine if other customers are experiencing similar geolocation mismatches

The issue remains unresolved and under investigation.

Strange issue… using Shopify Markets and Geolocation App. . We are in Canada. A long time Canadian customer had to dm me to place order because she was quoted in USA dollars and could not enter her Canadian address. I have already ruled out her use of a VPN or Starlink. She was not traveling in the USA. I am now continuing to troubleshoot…. Any thoughts?

I understand sometimes a new ISP service gets IPs reassigned from different countries and geolocation app take sometime to update their database. Potentially that is the issue. Maybe check with her in sometime to see if its a recurring issue? is anybody else facing this issue?
