Shopify Partner Town Hall—Editions Edition: Answers to questions from AMA

Thank you to our partners that attended Shopify Partner Town Hall—Editions Edition, on 28th June 2022. In this event, we shared highlights on products most relevant Shopify Partners. If you missed it, you can watch in the Partner Dashboard.

There were some questions we didn’t have time to get to in the AMA, so I am sharing answers here. I’m chasing down a few more answers so will update again next week.

What updates r planned for Search algorithm esp. the autocomplete feature? Today autocomplete doesn’t surface same results every time for a particular keyword

We will continuously iterate on our search ranking and autocomplete capabilities throughout the remainder of 2022. Our goal is to match merchants with exactly the solution they need, given where they are in their commerce journey.

When will you re-open app development to developers integrating other large 3rd party services? We can’t get fortune 500 to sign your data processing agreement

Our Intention is not to block you, but ensure merchants’ data is protected. To set up your app review for success, you should reach out to the end platforms to sign the acknowledgement forms prior to submission to the App Store. We’ll make sure this community is kept up to date with any potential future changes.

Many app developers are spoiling the ecosystem by having free apps, trying to become monopoly and trying to destroy others. Any plan of removing free pricing?

Freemium apps provide value for our entire ecosystem. Making a freemium app allows merchants to see how your app can add value to their store before they pay. Offering a freemium app increases retention over time and increases the initial install rate. After you’ve shown merchants the value that your app can provide, you can consider transitioning your freemium app to a paid app.

Will the b2b feature get a roll out to all of the plans once it’s out of beta?

B2B on Shopify, which launched in General Availability on June 27th, is exclusive to Plus merchants.

Metafield inputs UX issue: could Shopify have them show in the theme editor (filter which one to show based on template). Similar to theme settings in editor.

We are overall trying to have better integrations with metafields in admin - please keep providing your feedback and we’ll share some insights into our roadmap as soon as possible.

Would be great if you can handle content translations inside the admin instead of with an app. What is on the roadmap?

We’re working on a first party Translation app that will be well integrated throughout the admin. This feature will be generally available in the fall. The product team on this is open to hearing from developers wanting early access, which you can apply for here.

Will there be an API update in the near future allowing to update the customer of an order?
This is something our teams are actively looking into. When we have any updates, we will be sure to share it with partners right away.
