Shopify Payments Disabled After 6 Chargebacks – Requesting Reconsideration & Advice

Hello everyone,

I’m sharing my situation here because I genuinely need guidance and support from the community, and hopefully visibility from the Shopify team.

I’ve been using Shopify for over 3 years and have always taken customer satisfaction extremely seriously. Out of approximately 250 completed orders, we received only 6 chargebacks. Unfortunately, those 6 chargebacks happened close together in time, and as a result, Shopify Payments was disabled immediately.

What is difficult for me to understand is that this decision was made without giving us a real opportunity to resolve the issues directly with customers, even though we actively communicate and never ignore customer concerns.

At the time, some of our products had longer delivery timelines due to a restoration process. Even with these longer timelines, we never abandoned customers, always stayed in contact, and ensured orders were fulfilled. Customer satisfaction has always been a priority for us.

Since then, we have made major changes to completely eliminate any risk:

  • We have removed all restored products from our store

  • We now sell only new designer products

  • We offer a 14-day unconditional return policy

  • We provide fast worldwide shipping within ~5 business days

Despite these changes and our relatively low overall chargeback ratio, we received a final decision without a chance to prove these improvements in practice.

We are not trying to avoid responsibility — we are actively improving. I’m simply asking for a fair reconsideration, especially given our long history on Shopify and the concrete steps we’ve taken to reduce risk.

If anyone from the community has experienced something similar or knows the best way to escalate this for review, I would truly appreciate your advice.

That’s not “only”, that’s about 10 times the acceptable charge-back rate…

Unfortunately, once the charge-back is initiated, there is no time to settle with the customer. That’s the time to talk to the bank and prove your case.

Again, that’s not relatively low. Charge-backs are serious matters. An integrious merchant should have no more than 1% (ideally none to 0.6%).

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I understand that chargebacks are a serious matter, and we do not dispute their importance. However, we believe our situation warrants reconsideration based on Shopify’s own risk and merchant responsibility principles.

In our case, we were not effectively given the opportunity to resolve disputes directly with customers before the decision was finalized. A significant number of these chargebacks were opened before delivery, without prior customer contact, even though the orders were already in transit and delivery timelines were clearly disclosed on the product pages and shipping policy before purchase.

According to Shopify’s merchant best practices, merchants are encouraged to:

  • Clearly disclose fulfillment timelines

  • Maintain active customer communication

  • Attempt resolution before disputes escalate

We fully complied with these expectations.

In practice, when we are able to reach customers, we often successfully resolve concerns and have chargebacks withdrawn, as the issue is typically related to impatience or misunderstanding — not fraud, non-delivery, or product authenticity. Unfortunately, many customers open disputes without reading disclosures and without responding to emails.

Despite this, our Shopify Payments access was revoked before it was even determined whether these chargebacks would be won or lost. We believe this decision was made prematurely, without considering:

  • Our overall order volume

  • Our dispute resolution efforts

  • The temporary and situational nature of the chargebacks

Out of approximately 250 completed orders, only 6 chargebacks occurred. While we acknowledge that the timing of these disputes raised concern, the overall ratio and root cause do not indicate merchant negligence or high-risk behavior.

More importantly, we have taken immediate and concrete corrective actions to eliminate future risk entirely:

  • All restored products have been permanently removed from our store

  • We now sell only new designer products

  • A 14-day unconditional return policy has been implemented

  • Fast worldwide shipping (≈5 business days) is now standard

  • A dedicated WhatsApp support line has been launched to prevent disputes before escalation

We are also an official, certified reseller, with documentation proving lawful sourcing and resale authorization. This further supports that the disputes were not related to counterfeit concerns or prohibited activity.

Shopify Payments is critically important for our business, as it is the only globally supported payment solution that allows us to serve our international customer base efficiently. We have been a Shopify merchant for over 3 years, and we value the platform and its standards.

For these reasons, we respectfully believe that a reconsideration is justified, especially given the material changes made to our business model and our demonstrated commitment to compliance, transparency, and customer satisfaction.

We are not asking for exceptions — we are asking for a fair reassessment based on current operations, not past conditions that no longer exist.

Yeah that’s the problem. 6 successful charge-backs, how many were withdrawn to be considered “often”. That’s your problem. You’ve dug yourself into a big liability hole.

This is simply not true. You have demonstrated high-risk behavior. It’s bad business. And your unwillingness to admit or accept that is why this is happening. From what you have explained, this happens often enough to warrant Shopify Payments being disabled. Deleting products and claiming “current operations” doesn’t cut it because anyone can simply do it again. Sorry that happened but maybe it’s a good learning experience. Offer refund if you cannot hold true to delivering in a reasonable timeframe.

I understand your point, and I want to clarify something important to avoid any misunderstanding.

We did not switch to a new system because the previous one was fundamentally broken. We were already operating as a standard designer reseller, offering fast shipping, refunds, and full customer support on our regular (non-restored) products. Those operations were already compliant and functioning without issue.

The restored products were an additional offering, not our core business. They represented a specific category with clearly disclosed timelines, and even there, we maintained active communication and fulfillment. That said, once it became clear that this model was creating elevated risk signals — regardless of intent or disclosure — we made the decision to remove restored products entirely.

This decision was made specifically to prevent further disputes and ensure a smooth, low-risk operation moving forward. Today, we are operating exclusively as a normal certified reseller, with:

  • Short, fixed delivery timelines

  • A 14-day unconditional refund policy

  • Proactive customer communication

  • Immediate refund offers when expectations cannot be met

So to be clear: this is not an attempt to reframe or excuse past outcomes. It is a deliberate risk-elimination decision. The conditions that led to clustered chargebacks no longer exist, and the same scenario cannot recur under our current operating model.

For this reason, our request for reconsideration is forward-looking and procedural. We are asking to be assessed based on how the business operates now, not on a discontinued product category that we have permanently removed in order to align with platform risk expectations.

The decision-making power shifts entirely to the customer’s bank; Shopify acts only as a pass-through for evidence, once a customer initiates a chargeback with their bank. If you close the store, it becomes much harder to communicate with support or access the data needed to fight remaining chargebacks. Ensure the bank account on file is active. Merchants often lose access to funds because their bank account changes during the 4 month waiting period, causing a “failed payout” loop that is difficult to fix with a banned account.

That’s a tough situation, and unfortunately it’s more common than it should be.

One thing that can help prevent this early on is keeping detailed logs per order (payment status, IP, country, retries, customer communication) so you can quickly show patterns and context if chargebacks start clustering. It also helps internally to spot risky orders before they escalate.

Another important step is switching to manual capture, at least for higher-risk or higher-value orders. Authorizing first and capturing only after review gives you a buffer to catch issues before money is settled and chargebacks pile up.

If you’re looking for extra protection, tools like Fraudless can help by scoring orders in real time, logging fraud signals clearly, and flagging or holding risky transactions before they turn into chargebacks. It won’t fix Shopify’s policies, but it can reduce the chance of getting into this situation again.

I’ve seen a few merchants get reinstated after a Payments disable,
but the ones who succeed all do the same thing — they don’t argue
about the past chargebacks. They submit a forward-looking action plan.

Here’s what Shopify’s risk team actually wants to see in your appeal:

  1. Root cause analysis: Don’t just say “the chargebacks were unfair.”
Break down each one by reason code and explain specifically what
went wrong. For the ones filed during transit, acknowledge that
    your shipping communication was insufficient.

  2. Concrete changes you’ve already made:

    • “I’ve added automated shipping notification emails at 3 stages:
order confirmed, shipped, and out for delivery”
    • “I’ve updated my product pages with clear delivery timeframes
(X-Y business days) and added a visible pre-purchase disclaimer”
    • “I’ve enabled 3D Secure for all transactions over $X”
    • “I’ve installed [fraud screening tool] to auto-cancel high-risk orders”
  3. Chargeback prevention metrics: If you have any period with
lower dispute rates, highlight it. “In the last 30 days, I’ve
processed X orders with 0 chargebacks” is powerful.

  4. A commitment to maintain sub-0.5% chargeback rate going forward.

Format this as an actual document — not a casual email. Professional
tone, numbered sections, specific dates and order numbers.
The risk team reviews hundreds of these. The ones that look
structured and serious get a second look.

One more thing: while your appeal is pending, get a backup payment
processor set up immediately. Don’t wait for Shopify’s answer
with zero ability to take payments.
