Shopify payments for CBD?

I gather that it’s still not possible to use Shopify Payments for CBD products. That’s what I’ve always been told.

Is that still the case. If so, can someone please let me know how this site https://cannaraycbd.com/ is able to use it? They clearly use Shopify Payments and Shop pay in their checkout and have done for some time.

Hi @shornuk

Our support team is not able to confirm if a merchant is hosted using our services or if they are using Shopify Payments on their store. I recommend contacting the store directly to learn more about their payment gateways and the steps they took to get approved.

Hey did you ever learn how these brands are being allowed to use Shopify payments? My brand Highdration sales electrolyte powder infused with hemp derived CBD. I had a brand try to steal our name and to my surprise they were using Shop Pay and they still are. I have contacted Shopify multiple times but there is no help given from them.

What I think is going is Shopify allows brands who have a subscription to Shopify Plus ($2,500 a month) to use Shopify payments.

Ah OK. Well that seems to make a bit more sense now. Never had a straight answer from Shopify, just the old “can’t talk about other peoples accounts” type line.

Not sure I’d be wanting to put up for the plus account, without the guarantee of being accepted for the payments.

Hey! Yeah, you’re spot on — Shopify Payments still doesn’t allow CBD products in the UK, and that hasn’t changed. It’s super frustrating, especially when you see big brands like CannarayCBD using what looks like Shopify Payments or Shop Pay at checkout.

What’s likely happening there is they’re either on Shopify Plus (which gives them more flexibility) or using a custom setup that mimics the Shopify Payments flow — but behind the scenes, it’s probably a totally different processor.

For most of us smaller or mid-sized sellers, that route just isn’t realistic.

What has worked really well for me (and a bunch of others in the CBD/vape space) is using Wall ID (Wallidpay) — it’s a payment gateway built just for our kind of products, and it works perfectly with Shopify. Super easy to set up, and you don’t even need to be a registered LTD to start.

Here’s the app link if you want to check it out:

Hope that helps! I know the CBD space can feel like a minefield sometimes  but this made things way smoother on my end.

Cheers!

I use Organic Payment Gateways for my CBD business. Lower rates, easy integration.

Do they Apple Pay integrated

You’re right — Shopify Payments still doesn’t officially allow CBD products, even if they’re 100% legal in the UK. That’s been the case for a while.

As for how CannarayCBD is using it — they might be using Shopify Plus with a custom setup, or possibly a third-party provider that looks like Shopify Payments on the front end. Sometimes big brands get special arrangements, but it’s not the norm and can be risky to try replicating.

If you’re selling CBD, a safer option would be something like WallidPay (https://apps.shopify.com/wallidpay), which supports direct bank payments and tends to be more flexible with products like CBD.

Hope that helps!

I ran into the same issue and ended up switching my store to only ship where it’s legal and clear by state laws—kept my payment provider happy and avoided sudden shutdowns.

For what it’s worth, we’ve got different payment providers in the UK and US which work ok.
But have been looking into subscriptions recently and there’s little support.

Which lead me to finding another Shopify store that seems to allow Shopify Payments. (They have subscriptions set up)
