Shopify Payments – No HKID for Hong Kong Company (US Citizen)

I’m in the process of setting up Shopify Payments for my business, which is a Hong Kong-registered company. However, in the Account Representative section, it’s asking me to provide a Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID).

I’m a U.S. citizen and the owner of the company, but I don’t have an HKID since I’m not a Hong Kong resident.

Has anyone else faced this issue before?

  • Is there a workaround for this situation?
  • Can I provide my U.S. passport or other identification instead?
  • Or do I need to appoint someone in Hong Kong with an HKID to be listed as the account representative?

Appreciate any help or guidance from others who’ve dealt with this before. Thank you!

Bit strange on it, shopify is strick with payment gateway.

Maybe you can register a you business in USA, activate as a USA store and sell only in HK

I have the same situation, ended up using HK paypal and stripe as a gateway. If you have a HK nominee I’m assuming you can use their HKID as a workaround but this is something I also do not have. Did not go the support route, so lmk how you get on as ideally I would prefer to use SP myself

I contacted their support team, and they requested documents such as a lease agreement and utility bills. However, I was short on time and couldn’t continue the chat with them. Instead, I decided to go with WooCommerce, using Stripe and PayPal as payment gateways. I have since canceled my Shopify plan and will not be using it further.

If you’re facing a similar issue, I’d say the only solution is to contact their support team directly.

From what I understand, your business is based in Hong Kong, but you’re having trouble getting access to Shopify Payments. Could you let me know which country or countries you’re mainly trying to sell your products in?

My suggestion is to focus on using local payment methods that are popular in your target markets. That way, you can still accept payments and grow your business while continuing to work on getting approved for Shopify Payments.

Yes, having Shopify Payments is definitely a good advantage, but I also know quite a few merchants who are doing really well using only local payment options. It’s more important to make it easy for your customers to pay than to rely on just one solution :grinning_face:
