Shopify Payments paused for 9+ days — banner says "no action required" but no email received

Hi everyone,

My Shopify Payments payouts have been paused for over 9 days. The banner in my admin says:

“Payouts are paused. Payouts will resume once we review your account. No action is required, but we’ll send an email to your store owner.”

However, I have not received any email at all. I’ve contacted Shopify Support multiple times but still no concrete update or ETA on when the review will be completed.

My questions:

  • Has anyone experienced this type of review before?
  • How long did it take to resolve?
  • Did Shopify eventually ask for documents, or did it resolve automatically?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

9 days with zero email is rough. That “no action required” banner is often stale by the time you see it — usually there’s something pending (ID verification, bank details, a risk flag) even when it says otherwise. I’d skip waiting on email and go straight to Shopify Support chat, and ask them specifically to check your payouts account status/hold reason directly, they can see it even when the admin banner is vague.

Hi @Truc1203
Since the banner specifically says “No action is required” but no email has arrived after 9 days, I’d also ask Shopify Support to confirm whether there is actually an open verification/review case attached to the account.

I’d keep the ticket/reference number and ask them to confirm the current review status, whether any documents are pending from your side, and whether the payout hold is affecting only payouts or the Payments account itself.

If they confirm that nothing is required from you, I’d ask them to note that clearly on the case and provide an escalation/reference for the Finance or Payments review team. That way you have a documented trail instead of repeatedly starting new support chats.

Worth separating two things that both put that banner on your admin, because they resolve very differently.

One is a payout hold. The money still lands in your Shopify balance, orders keep authorising and capturing normally, you just cannot withdraw. The other is a review of the Payments account itself, where new charges start failing at checkout. Look at your last few orders and check they are still being paid for cleanly. If they are, you are in the first case, and that one usually clears on its own without anyone ever asking you for a document.

On the missing email. Those notices go to the store owner address, which is not always the address you log in with, and not the sender address you set under notifications. If somebody else set the store up, or the owner email is an old one nobody reads any more, the email can have been sent and delivered exactly as the banner promised and you would never see it. Settings, then Users and permissions, and look at which address is sitting on the owner account.

Also open the Shopify Payments section in settings and scroll past the banner. Pending document requests sometimes sit down there as their own item while the top of the page still says no action is required.

Nine days is long but not unheard of. Did anything shift right before it started? A jump in daily volume, a first order into a new country, a bank account change, or a spike in chargebacks are the usual triggers for one of these reviews.

@Truc1203 Adding one thing that looks exactly the same from the admin but is a completely different problem.

Go to Settings, Payments, then open Shopify Payments and click through to your payout history. Look at the individual payouts, not just the banner. If you see one marked failed rather than just nothing arriving, then this is not a review at all, its your bank rejecting the transfer. That happens when the account name does not match the legal entity on file, or an account was closed, or the details have a digit off. Shopify pauses payouts after a rejection and the banner it shows reads almost the same as a review banner. Different fix entirely, and its one you can sort out yourself in an afternoon.

If the payouts just are not there rather than failing, then its a genuine review and @lumine is right about how it usually goes.

Three things worth checking on your own side while you wait, because these are what stall reviews the longest:

The name on your bank account has to match the legal entity on the Payments account exactly. Personal account on a business entity, or a slightly different trading name, is the single most common thing that keeps one of these open.

The business type on file, individual or company, has to match how the store is actually operating.

The product categories you declared when you set up Payments should match what you are actually selling now. Stores drift over time and nobody remembers to update this.

Also get your document pack ready now rather than waiting for them to ask. Government ID for the owner, business registration if you have an entity, a recent bank statement showing the account name, and if you dropship, something showing your supplier relationship and that you can actually fulfill. When the request comes it usually has a deadline attached, and being able to reply the same hour instead of two days later genuinely shortens these.

Last thing, and this is the practical one. Set up a backup payment method now while you still can. PayPal or a third party gateway, added alongside Shopify Payments, not replacing it. Do not deactivate Shopify Payments during a review, that just makes things worse. But if this ever moves from payouts held to charges failing at checkout, you do not want to be starting a gateway application that day. Getting one approved takes time you would not have.

Your money is not going anywhere, its sitting in the balance and it all releases at once when this clears. Nine days is long but its within normal for these.
