Shopify payments registration asking for TIN number in EU?

Topic summary

A Czech Republic-based merchant is encountering issues registering for Shopify Payments due to a required 9-digit personal TIN (Tax Identification Number) field. The user notes that TIN numbers are US-specific and Czech Republic doesn’t have an equivalent format.

Key Issues:

  • Shopify support suggested entering the business VAT ID, but this is already provided in a separate Business Details section and doesn’t match the 9-digit personal format required
  • Available Czech identification numbers (EEA ID, birth date, VAT ID, business IDs) don’t fit the field’s format requirements
  • The user confirms Shopify Payments is supported in Czech Republic and other businesses have successfully registered

Suggested Solutions:

  • Continue working with Shopify support to escalate the issue to their tax department for a potential workaround
  • One commenter suggested an alternative solution using Stripe integration that works regardless of location and supports multiple currencies and payment methods

Status: The issue remains unresolved with no clear answer on what number Czech merchants should enter in the TIN field.

I recentely tried registering for Shopify payments, however the registration form requires a personal TIN number in a format of 9 digit number. I am located in the Czech Republic and as far as I know, TIN numbers are specific for the US, we don’t have any such thing here.

Shopify support told me to enter my business’s VAT ID, but that I already enter in the VAT number under Business details section. It has nothing to do with me as a person. And it doesn’t have the correct format.

I believe we don’t even have any such 9 digit number here. EEA ID card, birth date, VAT ID, and business IDs all have non-suitable format for this field.

Still I know businesses that are registered for Shopify payments here, and it is supported in the Czech Republic. I must be missing something here. Can somebody point me the right direction please?

Thank you!

Hi @wolf213 !

I highly suggest that you keep an open communication with Shopify support team regarding this matter as they can further escalate your concern to their tax department if any. That way, they can explain to you further and have a workaround if necessary. VAT ID should be good to go though, if it does not fit the format, you can double check with Shopify support team if how can you go from there.

Check this article and solution. It works regardless of your location/country.

With Stripe and this solution you can accept payments in multiple currency with many payment methods supported by your Stripe account.
