I’m writing to formally request the expansion of Shopify Payments to Slovakia.
This has been an ongoing request from the Slovak merchant and developer community for several years, with multiple threads raised in the Shopify Community forum — yet the issue remains unresolved. As someone working in the Slovak e-commerce space, I’d like to highlight why this matters:
Why Slovakia?
Slovakia is a eurozone member, meaning no currency conversion complexity is involved — merchants already operate in EUR, just like many countries where Shopify Payments is already supported.
Slovakia ranks among the top 10 European countries for e-commerce in consumer services, demonstrating a viable and growing market.
There is clear and sustained merchant demand, as evidenced by repeated community requests dating back to at least 2022.
The absence of Shopify Payments forces Slovak merchants to rely on third-party payment providers, which come with additional transaction fees — fees that merchants in supported countries don’t have to pay. This creates an unfair disadvantage.
Many businesses and agencies in Slovakia actively want to recommend Shopify as their platform of choice, but the lack of native payments support is a significant blocker.
Adding Shopify Payments to Slovakia would level the playing field for Slovak merchants, reduce unnecessary costs, and strengthen Shopify’s position in a growing Central European market.
I would appreciate any update on whether this is on the roadmap, and I strongly encourage the team to prioritize this expansion.
@Matej_Pavelek Well said, you’re not wrong here, but the reality check here is shopify rarely confirms roadmap or timelines publicly, so you probably won’t get a direct “yes, it’s coming” answer.
You’re asking for something reasonable but it’s just a slow, compliance heavy rollout on shopify’s side.
You raise a very valid point, and this has been a recurring topic for several countries in Europe, not just Slovakia.
Even though Slovakia is part of the eurozone, payment availability is often not only about currency, but also about how payment infrastructure is set up locally. Providers like Shopify Payments depend on underlying acquiring, regulatory, and risk frameworks that are rolled out country by country, which is why some EU markets are supported earlier than others.
In practice, many merchants in countries like Slovakia end up using a combination of third-party providers to cover their needs, although as you mentioned, this can introduce additional fees and complexity compared to native integrations.
As ecommerce continues to grow in Central and Eastern Europe, it would definitely make sense for Shopify to expand coverage, especially in eurozone countries where many barriers are already reduced.
Out of curiosity, what payment providers are you currently using in Slovakia, and are they mainly focused on local transactions or international as well?
