Hi, I’m receiving the following message:
“Payouts are paused due to an issue with your bank. Replace your bank account or contact your bank to resolve the issue and resume payouts.”
According to both my bank and Shopify, everything appears to be working correctly. The issue started after I password-protected my online store. That may just be a coincidence, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? I’m at a loss because I genuinely don’t know what is causing it, and I’m unable to connect a different bank account.
The bank details are correct, the balance is enough it worked totally fine, until well it didn’t. No changes to the payments were made.
Hope that someone had the same problem and was able to fix it.
Best regards
We see this notification across client stores fairly regularly and the wording is misleading. It says bank, but in most of the cases we have looked at the bank was fine and the real trigger was a mismatch between the documents on the Shopify Payments account and the business or personal address registered to the store. A different address on the ID than in the account, an old address after a move, personal details sitting on a business account, that kind of thing.
Since you have already been in touch, it is worth going back on live chat and asking specifically what triggered the pause rather than what the banner says. First line support tends to repeat the generic message, so ask them to look at the account review notes and tell you which field is failing. Once you know that, the fix is usually five minutes.
On the password protection, probably coincidence in my opinion. Hope it gets resolved soon!
Hi @gotaquestion1 Welcome To Shopify Community So Password-protecting your store being the trigger is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as coincidence, some payment risk systems interpret a suddenly password-locked storefront as a signal that the business may have gone inactive or is hiding something (even if that’s not the actual reason), which can trigger an automated payout hold completely separate from your actual bank details being correct. Since your bank account itself checks out fine on both ends, this points to a risk/compliance flag rather than an actual banking error, the generic “issue with your bank” message is often just a catch-all and not literally accurate. I’d contact Shopify Payments support directly (not general support) and specifically mention the timing correlation with password-protecting your store, that detail alone might help them pinpoint what triggered it faster than a generic “payouts paused” ticket would. Hope this helps solve your problem, and if it does, don’t forget to like and mark it as the solution. Thank you!
Good afternoom @gotaquestion1,
@jannemec and @Mustafa_Ali have the two likeliest causes between them.
There is a third worth ruling out, because it is the one your bank genuinely cannot see.
A payout can be sent and then rejected by the receiving bank.
The credit goes back to the sender, so it never lands and never shows on your statement as a failure. There is no failed line for your bank to find, which is why “everything looks correct” can be true and still not reassuring.
Your own detail argues against that one though, and it is the most useful thing in your post: you cannot connect a different bank account.
If a payout had simply been returned, replacing the account is the normal remedy and you would be able to do it.
Being blocked from changing it points at the account being under review rather than at a rejected transfer.
So the question that separates all three, and it is two questions rather than one: ask Shopify Payments whether there is a hold on the account, and separately whether the last payout was returned and with what reason code. Those are different systems and the answers often disagree.
If there is a return code, it names the field that failed. If there is a hold and no return, the money never left, and the bank was never involved at all.
One small thing to add to the answers above: when a Shopify Payments account goes under review, the document request usually arrives by email and is easy to miss, so it’s worth searching the inbox (and spam) for anything from Shopify Payments and checking Settings > Payments for a verification banner. Since the timing lines up with password-protecting the storefront, temporarily taking the password off while this gets sorted could also help - a locked storefront can read as an inactive business to the automated risk checks. If a document request does turn up, answering that directly tends to unblock payouts much faster than waiting on the generic banner to clear.
Hello there @gotaquestion1
That sounds like hold on the payout that may be a verification or account configuration check and not really a bank issue. Password protection should not have any effect on payouts, so it may be just a coincidence. First, I’d temporarily remove the password, then go to Settings > Payments to verify the bank account info and see if there are any verfication requests or payout notices. If it’s all good and clear then try again with the same bank details rather than a different account. Also, check to see if maybe a recent payout was returned or rejected by the bank because that can cause this.
The misleading part seems worse than the pause itself — the system tells you “bank issue,” but you have already verified the bank and still don’t know what actually requires attention.
When you eventually get the root cause from Shopify, it would be really useful to know whether the final reason matched the original banner at all. Cases like this show how much operational time gets wasted when a warning identifies the symptom but not the actual failing condition
