I’m reaching out to see if anyone else is experiencing similar issues with Shopify POS. We’re currently using the new Google Pixel tablets for our point of sale systems across our 3-4 stores. Each store has 2 cashiers working simultaneously, and we handle approximately 80-100 products.
While everything is up to date and running on Android/ChromeOS, our store staff has been giving me loads of feedback that the devices are very slow, especially during the checkout process. This becomes really uncomfortable when several customers are queuing.
We had Samsung Galaxy tablets before switching to the Google Pixel tablets, and we faced similar performance issues back then too. I’m starting to think that this might be a problem with Shopify’s cloud performance, possibly hitting some sort of capacity limit.
Has anyone else encountered these performance problems with Shopify POS on tablets? Could there be other factors causing this slowdown?
Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Roundabout, I have the same problem. Honestly, it drives me almost to tears sometimes.
Unlike you, I only have one location, specifically a market stall (much smaller operation than yours ). I have the Wisepad with Android tablet and a wifi dongle. I’ve lost count of the number of times the checkout has just got stuck hanging. It’s got so bad that I keep a Zettle card reader as a backup, which isn’t ideal as it doesn’t keep my stock control up to date. I can always tell how bad a time the Shopify POS has had by the amount of money taken via Zettle instead.
I’m thinking of upgrading to the POS Go, but have reservations as it’s pricey, I’ve only had the Wisepad for about 9 months, and there’s no guarantee that it’ll be any more reliable.
Did you find any solution to the awful checkout experience?
I’ve started to experience this and it’s absolutely sole destroying. It’s now starting to say “Approved” on the WisePad but then it doesn’t connect to the POS and comes up as payment declined, at which point the customer has already left with the goods!! This has happened twice now and I’m really not sure what to do!
Hi there, I´m facing the same issues for weeks and it´s driving us crazy. Randomly, different things happen to us on a regular basis. (1) The POS app signals that there is apparently no internet connection, closing and reopening the POS app provides a short-term remedy or (2) after the card payment has been made, it takes a very long time until the process is also completed on the app (60sec+) or (3) after a process has been completed on the POS app, no receipt is printed out. Various measures have not helped. Troubleshooting recommendations have been implemented Shopify Help Center | Troubleshooting the Shopify POS app. Have an iPad in use (WLAN AP in the immediate distance) and POS Go device, as well as Epson receipt printer, both via LAN in the network. All conceivable constellations to bring the devices into the network in other ways were unsuccessful. Any advice? Any analytics tools? Thank you and regards, Stefan
I had an Android tablet connected to a mobile wifi dongle, and had the same experience as you. It was so incredibly unreliable. I tried switching networks but that didn’t help.
The solution I’ve found is ditching the tablet and the dongle. I now use my iPhone and 4G and (touch wood) it is much faster and seems to hang less.
Thank you, Brutus, for your feedback. I will try this measure once to see if it can rule out other things. What annoys me about the whole situation, apart from the negative impact on daily business and customer situations, is the amount of time we’ve already invested in trying to get it under control. And: we’ve been using Shopify POS for 16 months now and had no problems at all in the first year. There were no changes to the internal network and we still have the same internet provider.
Same issue here… Knowing that we pay a 1 to 2 % on each transaction to shopify, this is a very poor digital service from them, it should work perfectly. We have many customers in line and all of them have to wait 30 to 60 seconds before the payment gets trough. Hardware/software is new and up to date, we have a very stable internet connection.
If Shopify does not fix this soon, I’ll start exploring other services.
