Shopify’s Point of Sale (POS) app is failing to apply sales tax at checkout. Taxes briefly appear as estimated for a few seconds, then disappear, resulting in untaxed transactions.
Actions already attempted, per support guidance, without success:
Changing locations
Enabling Hybrid-on mode
Verifying location setup
Confirming correct tax ID
Logging out/in and reinstalling the app
Support has handed the case between multiple agents, but no root cause, workaround, or fix has been provided. The issue remains unresolved and open.
The “appearing then disappearing” tax is a specific sign that Shopify’s automated engine is actively flagging your items as tax-exempt based on their data. The most likely culprit is the Product Category or the Physical Product setting. If your items are categorized as specific types of apparel, food, or digital goods, the system may be applying an automatic state exemption. Try changing a product’s category to “General” and ensure the “This is a physical product” box is checked in the product details; if this box is unchecked, POS treats it as a non-taxable digital service.
Secondly, you must re-validate your Location Pin. Even if the address text is correct, the tax engine requires a geospatial lock to calculate rates. Go to Settings > Locations, click “Edit” on your address, and re-select it from the Google Maps dropdown menu until the map pin appears. Saving this forces the system to re-establish your tax nexus.
If you need an immediate fix while troubleshooting, you can bypass the automated engine by using a Tax Override. Create a manual collection containing all your products, go to Settings > Taxes and duties, and add a “Product Override” for that collection with your specific local tax rate (e.g., 8%). This forces the POS to charge that flat percentage regardless of what the automated engine attempts to do.
Thanks for the explaining the issue in details. Since you’ve already tried all the standard troubleshooting steps, this doesn’t look like a setup mistake on your end.
When taxes appear briefly and then disappear in Shopify POS, it’s usually a back-end POS tax calculation issue.
I recommended escalating this directly to Shopify Tier 2 POS engineering and asking them to review the POS TAX calculation logs.
That’s definitely frustrating, especially after trying all the right steps. When POS shows tax briefly and then removes it, it’s often tied to how the product tax settings and POS channel rules sync with the location. This usually isn’t obvious in the admin. Have you checked whether the affected products are marked as taxable specifically for POS, and does this happen for all products or only some?
Hi, it affects all products. I’ve confirmed with the support team, and they said I set everything up correctly. They are escalating my problem to their tax team, but I’m not sure why it is related to the tax team instead of the tech team

For the product category side of things, I would highly recommend referring to our “Shopify’s Standard Product Taxonomy” resource which provides a lot of important information regarding product categories.
When creating a product, the category generally is suggested based on the product that you’ve created. For example, if the keyword “T-Shirt” is in my product title, the system is able to recognize this and suggest the category (highlighted in purple).
However, you would have the option to select your own product category depending on the product, or if the system is unable to make a suggestion.
Regarding the main topic, when you notice the sales tax appear briefly in the POS Cart, and then notice it disappear, it is generally due to the system recognizing that sales tax shouldn’t be applied to the order. This itself can be due to a few different reasons.
Are the correct product categories assigned to the products? Product categories are labels that are assigned to products or to collections of products. They are used to indicate the tax obligations and exemptions that apply to a purchase.
Is the address for the POS Location complete/valid? For example, does it include the country/region, address, city, state/province, zip code/postal code?
Is the “Include sales tax in product price and shipping rate” setting enabled? For this, you’ll want to head over to your Shopify Admin > click Settings > click Taxes and Duties > scroll down the page and ensure this setting is turned off. Below is an image of where this setting is located.
Does the POS Location (region) that you’re selling from have any exemptions? For example, New York has a clothing exemption where most apparel and footwear priced under $110 (per item) are exempt from NY State sales tax (4%) and certain local taxes.
Are the products setup as physical products, and do they charge sales tax?
If your matter was escalated, it would most likely mean that these areas have been checked and further review is required, but we can always double-check them to be sure. Another step that we can take is to have you submit a Bug Report directly from the Shopify POS app from which you are experiencing this matter with sales tax, and this can be sent through the following steps.
Note: The best way for us to review the issue is to have you try adding a product to the POS Cart > see the taxes appear and then disappear > and then submit the Bug Report. Additionally, when outlining the issue in Step 4, make note of the date and time, and the name of the product that you had tested with.
We’re experiencing a persistent issue with Shopify POS where sales tax is not being applied at checkout.
Observed behavior:
Sales tax briefly appears as estimated for a few seconds
The tax line then disappears before payment is completed
Transactions are finalized without any tax applied
Troubleshooting already completed (per Shopify Support guidance):
Changed POS locations
Enabled Hybrid POS mode
Verified location configuration
Confirmed correct tax ID and tax settings
Logged out/in of the POS app
Reinstalled the POS app
None of the above steps resolved the issue.
Current status:
The case has been transferred between multiple support agents
No root cause, workaround, or permanent fix has been identified
The issue remains open and unresolved
This appears to be a system-level or account-specific POS tax calculation issue rather than a configuration error. Any insight from Shopify staff or other merchants who have encountered a similar POS tax behavior would be appreciated.

I was able to refer to the Bug Report that you had submitted and saw that it was escalated to our Support Team.
Our Support Team were able to determine, based on the example of Order 1209, that the product sold was incorrectly categorized as a digital good and therefore, the tax service determined that the sales tax should be $0.00 as digital products are tax exempt in the state of California.
I hope we were able to provide more context pertaining to the issue that you were experiencing but I would love to know if the sales tax is being applied now for products that are correctly categorized?
Thank you for the update and for looking into this.
To clarify the situation: sales tax is being correctly applied for orders placed through my online store. However, for in-person POS transactions, sales tax is still not being collected.
Regarding Order #1209, both products were already set up as physical products with “charge tax” enabled at the time of sale**(I try to attach photos, but it does not allow me to attach as a new user; if possible, you can check my backstage).** I did not make any changes to the product settings before or after that order.
Also, If the items had truly been categorized as digital goods, I would expect tax to be excluded across all sales channels, not only on POS. This is why the behavior seems inconsistent.
At this point, POS transactions are still not applying sales tax even though all products are correctly configured as physical and taxable. If possible, could you please guide me on how to verify whether any products are still marked as digital goods or if there is a setting that disables this option? I would like to double-check my configuration to ensure everything is set up correctly.
Could you please help further investigate why POS is not recognizing the tax settings correctly? Thank you again for your support. I look forward to your guidance on how to resolve this.
Thank you for pointing out the digital goods setting — that helped me identify something important.
In the Duties and Taxes settings, there is an option called “Charge VAT on digital goods.” I had this option enabled previously. I just tested disabling it, and after turning it off, the POS system immediately started collecting sales tax correctly.
Could you please help clarify the purpose of this setting? I want to make sure I fully understand its impact. My understanding is that this option is intended to apply VAT to digital products, mainly for regions such as Europe, and should not affect physical product tax collection in the United States. However, since this setting appears to have affected POS tax behavior, I want to confirm whether disabling it is the correct long-term solution.
Also, please let me know if keeping this option turned off could have any unintended impact on my current tax setup or future compliance.
