Shopify pricing plans and theme customization

Hi,

I’m a developer and have a custom store website design written in Javascript/CSS. I’d like to hook it up to Shopify for the back-end. I don’t want to use any of Shopify’s templates and have a very specific site structure and look for my shop. I know Shopify Plus gives you the ability to customize theme files, but I’m not an enterprise large-scale business, so it doesn’t make sense to purchase that plan.

My question is, can I somehow still implement my custom design, with one of Shopify’s cheaper pricing plans? Can I take advantage of Shopify’s Liquid templating language while on Shopify basic? I’m a little confused about what I can and cannot customize on each of Spotify’s pricing plans.

Note: I understand that the checkout/cart look cannot be customized outside of Shopify Plus. Correct? But I would also like to know whether this applies to the rest of the store design, like the item pages, and the home page. Can I customize those / build those pages from scratch using any of the lower-tiered pricing options?
