Hi.
I recently changed the name of the products in a smaller product portfolio. While doing that I also created new links in the url-handle field on each product card. All went well. The shop I’m working on has a Swedish version (fully translated), a German version (90% translated), a UK version with pound as currency and a US version with $.
To my question.
As the name and url change created a bunch of redirects on all local pages I’m wondering if I should
A) Just leave the redirect as is.
B) Remove the redirect and have it land on a 404.
I’m seeing both the old name/old url and the new name/new url on Google… Will the old url/name stay on Google as long as I have the redirect in place?
Please be kind as I’m new to the world of Shopify and SEO.
Hey Janne,
Definitely leave the redirects in place!
This tells search engines and users that your product has just moved, but still exists.
If you leave it as a 404 this is a temporarily gone status, which signals to search engines that this product does not exist anymore.
You can also use this redirect checker, to make sure the old URL redirects in one hop from the old page to the new: https://httpstatus.io/
Hope that helps

Thanks Marc! The redirects show one hop in https://httpstatus.io/. Many thanks for that advice!
One example below.
| Old redirected url |
New url |
When checking the new url against Google I get the new at the top followed by the old one.
If I want the old “Pink Konny Leash” to vanish from Google you mean this will happen in time through the redirect?

Yes, once Google has found and processed the redirect the old URL will disappear and only the destination URL of the redirect will show in search results.
One more thing you need to do now is, Index all of the new URLs in the Google Search Console.
After that, cross check your sitemap.xml file, it should contain new URLs.
If after all that, you still see the old URL, you can add the old URLs in the Removal section of Google Search Console.
